DSSD Haters Secretly Rejoicing Deepsea Blue?

A week ago Rolex teased everyone on their homepage with the mysterious August 4th launch date. Now the Rolex community is shocked with the Deepsea Blue's arrival. I must say, I have never seen so much activity on a controversial watch in my life. It almost seems like a new found respect is found for the DSSD, which I am glad.

I have to admit, I too am fascinated with its arrival. Since I already have the DSSD, I will not be purchasing. Had the DSSD Blue been available, I really cannot say that I would have chosen it over the DSSD. To be quite honest, I find the text on the standard DSSD to be a better balance than the way the dial is presented.

It almost seems like the dial is too "busy" with having the DEEPSEA on the bottom. Omega did a similar change on their newer Seamaster line by rearranging the text on the dial. I am quite happy with the way the PO is laid out below, which makes the dial text uniform and proportional; similar to the DSSD.

I am also not crazy at all about the Green color. This is the primary reason I bought my PO with a standard black dial/bezel. After 7 years of ownership, I can't say I would be all too happy had I gone with the Orange model.

I will say, the Blue dial is an excellent change for Rolex. Since I have a PO, I am already used to the bluish AR coating on the crystal. I imagine that's exactly the way the DSSD dial will now look. That's a welcome change in my opinion. With the addition to the line, this will sure be the revitalizing factor for the DSSD that Rolex was hoping for.

Well, the YMII caused quite a stir when it first came out. Some called it the ClownMaster, because of the colors. Now it's one of the most popular Rolex watches.

There have been many dust ups over previous releases that makes this one seem tame.

If the DSSD D-Blue suffers from any excesses, they have nothing to do with the dial.

Having seen some pictures that are in natural light and more life-size, I have to say that the dial looks quite tasteful, even the green text.

I, of course, will have to wait until my AD gets one in stock, which I think will take some time, as we are not considered a big market out here in NM.

I do not think so. The size of the DSSD is still huge and the bracelet still looks tiny compared to the case. So changing the color of the dial will not fix those issues.

A wider bracelet would make the watch uncomfortable to wear.
Current bracelet is good with me.

Have you tried 22mm bracelets like IWC's Aquatimer bracelet? It's pretty comfortable.

For those who think that a wider bracelet might be too heavy, it actually balances out better with the heavy watch case.

A color change isn't beautifying something whose case, dial, and proportions aren't appealing.

I have a 16mm tall diver and find it massive and top heavy (but it looks good ). With the DSSD does it wear better from a balance perspective being even 2mm taller? I hear criticism about it being big but not sure I hear a lot of complaints about how it balances on the wrist (or is someone who dropped $13K on a huge unbalanced watch likely to keep such things quiet? ).

IMO the new blue dial Deepsea is simply an addition to the Rolex lineup that means customers have wider choice.

We have a GMT 2 that comes with either a black bezel/green 24 hr hand in steel; blue/black bezel with blue 24hr hand; steel and gold; and full yellow gold with choice of black or green dials.

As for the Sub, it comes in many forms - all green, all black, with or without date, steel and gold, white or yellow gold.

Ditto for the Daytona, Milgauss, YM and YM2.

So why not a variation on the Deepsea? There will be some who like the blue over black, others the other way around. More choice is better than no choice, IMHO.

The DSSD is a beautiful marvel of technology IMHO. It can go as deep as the depth of the final resting place of the Titanic and it is still comfortable on the wrist. I own one and had previously owned a Sub. The upgrades I believe are well worth the extra price. You have a thicker crystal, thicker case, titanium case back, glide lock clasp, divers extension and nearly 13x depth rating. This new DSDB is the same great technological marvel but I believe they should've just made the gradient not on the dial but making the bezel blue and the face black with the green lettering. I actually like the green lettering it really makes it pop and shows it's really a special edition.

Agreed...I think. Will know once I see it in person. The real life pics being posted have sold me more so than the promo stuff from Rolex.

But I also see it as an excuse to have both the SD-C and DeepSea now...not that I couldn't before, but now in my own mind I can possibly justify it.

+1. And, you can get that gradient dial on a sub, SD or gmt, so you have to get the DSSD to enjoy that cool dial.

I don't like the balance of the DSSD in general. I don't like the ridiculous amount of wording on the DSSD. The new color does nothing for me. The Hollywood movie promotional is shameless, cheapens the brand and makes it a epic mistake.

Have to agree with everything here. That and they made D-bag Cameron the center of the launch.

I'm sure all the negative comments come from people who haven't even seen the film. Obviously the DSSD isn't for them, but no need to be negative towards James Cameron, Rolex or owners who have the watch.

If you don't like it, so be it, but no need to ruin it for others who do.

Well said. Not every watch is to everyone's liking, however there are those that do.

I fail to see what taking a shot at Mr. Cameron has to do with anything.

Sad we have a certain number of people here that feel it's necessary to act in such a manner.
