I saw this Silky shark coming at me in the open ocean off the Galapagos Islands (while wearing my Sea-Dweller). I did NOT, however, see his partner, although I felt him when he banged into the back of my hip.

Had a close encounter with a Tiger Shark in the Red Sea about 5 years ago think that was the only time I really got scared underwater.Took a hit on air tank by a quite a large Oceanic White Tip on the Elphinestone reef Red Sea that made me gulp extra air for a bit, and put a extra lump in my wet suite .

So are hammerheads prone to eating humans? That's a huge group and I'd hate to be part or (or witness) a feeding frenzy.

Fantastic pictures, Dave. That last pic looks unreal. Is it real and is it in proportion? If so, how big is that mother?

Ed,

All of the photos are in proportion (1:1). What you see is what you get. The whale shark was about 40 feet long. It was the biggest of six our group saw in three days of diving off Darwin Island at the northern tip of the Galapagos chain. I only got to see one, and this was it. But it was worth it!

The silky and hammerhead sharks were between six and eight feet long, although some hammerheads could have been up to ten feet. The hammerheads are generally shy, although they will come close to check you out. The silky and Galapagos sharks are NOT shy, and the silkys are downright aggressive near the surface, especially if they catch you alone.

I had a very, very unpleasant encounter with two silky sharks when they found me doing a safety stop by myself in the open ocean. They kept circling and bumping me. They kept coming back no matter how hard I hit and kicked them. I have no doubt they would have had me for lunch if the encounter lasted much longer. Fortunately, I surfaced and the boat picked me up, but they the sharks hung around the boat for a long time after that. I still get upset when I think about it.

Man, looking at those photos, I do have to get back to diving one of these days! That said, if Sash knew about the sharks she'd throw an eppie-scoppie.

James you got more chance of being run down by a car crossing the road. That to be attacked by a shark while diving, most attacks on humans are by Bull sharks. And they only mistake humans for seals etc, after all you are in the sharks environment, the shark does not enter ours on land.

Spot-on Padi!!
We humans moan and crib about the very few annual shark attacks all around the world; but we never talk about the literally thousands of sharks that are mercilessly and cruelly hooked out of the sea, have their dorsal, ventral and tail fins hacked off (for the expensive and delicacy of shark-fin soup), and then thrown back into the waters only to be ripped to shreds by the other sharks who also await the same fate as their brothers and sisters.

Man thinks he can enter the shark's domain and come out unscathe, but, then again, he thinks it's okay to pull the shark out of its domain, hack the poor bastard to pieces and throw him back bleeding and helpless.

Man has just gotta be the biggest prey around!!! How the animals must "love" us!!

Well said Padi. I wholeheartedly agree. IMO, sharks are like dogs. Almost all will leave you alone or, at worst, come over to take a look or sniff you. Every once in a while you might get a nip. But they are opportunistic, and they will take advantage of a free meal if one is presented.

I have been diving with sharks for more than 15 years. I have counted more than 100 on some dives, and easily that many on my dives off Isla Darwin in the Galapagos. This incident was the first time when something bad happened, and it's not hard to see why.

I was alone, floating ten feet below the surface, and heading out to sea, when these two peeled away from a passing school of fish to see what I was. Maybe they thought I was an injured sea lion that had fallen off the rocks. But they were certainly curious, and I was worth checking out, so that's what they did. They circled me for a bit, getting closer and closer, before coming in to bump me. That was unpleasant, but I was not too surprised. What scared me was how they kept coming back when I hit them and kicked them. I felt like I was living the last five minutes of the movie "Open Water."
