I have a (maybe dumb) question , but I am the only one in TRF who thinks that the WG Blue Submariner looks like steel ? Although is a really beautiful piece !

you want gold get yellow gold

you want something to look like an artery not a vein

It has a much warmer (more yellow tone) in person than it does in pictures.
It also feels completely different than SS...IMO the nicest modern Rolex currently being produced.

@Rolexakias: You probably would if you money was not an issue - because YOU would know it was WG - and couldn't care less that others would think it was "only" steel.

Exactly! Who are you trying to impress anyway? Impress yourself...if that's not enough, no watch can help.

You probably should not look at platinum either given your bias.

If you prefer yellow gold, then that is great. It is good to know what you like.
You have probably irked some folks with your comments because by saying "am I the only one" you made the assumption that most would agree with you. There is a distinct difference between white gold and steel that is obvious when seen side by side in person.

Vodka may look similar to water, but there is a rather distinct difference.

I think you'd have to see it in person. I would love to have a WG Sub. In person the WG looks much nicer. IMO

When you eventually do see one in the flesh at an AD and try it on, you'll see it's very different to a stainless steel Sub. Heavier for a start, and as mentioned previously, has a different hue to it. The 116619LB is absolutely beautiful - if I had the funds I wouldn't hesitate in snapping one up in a heart beat!

If all you cared about was "the look," you could buy a gold-plated watch and skip the solid gold you're considering.

Owning and wearing gold (or platinum) is about the feel and pleasure I get from it. Most will never notice, if they do they won't know whether it's real or not, if they know it's real they likely won't have a clue what it cost, if they know -- they're one of you!

If the look was all that mattered, I could have saved a boat load of money by buying kit cars and cubic zirconia.

And no, it doesn't look like SS to me.

What I love about that watch is that most people will look at it and think it is stainless......

I agree it is "brighter" and definitely reflects more light.

Mike's image do a good job at showing the WG's hue, it's not quite like steel. However, to the untrained eye SS and WG definitely look similar. I think that the biggest difference between them is in how they feel, the WG is heavier and also is a better heat conductor so it will feel warmer after wearing than SS.

I think in pictures it can be very hard to tell the difference between platinum, steel, and white gold. I think sometimes we believe we can appreciate a difference in photos alone but that has more to do with our brains being programmed to recognize white gold when we see a blue Submariner.

In person it is a different story. The weight, sparkle, the way the metal catches the light is obvious. I don't think the OP is insecure or needs to be reprimanded by the members of this forum for his opinion. Sometimes I do detect a subtle condescending tone when people question something in precious metal or wonder why someone would purchase something in white gold or platinum. For me it's simple, my first precious metal watch will likely be in yellow gold because it will look more different than what I own in steel. I don't think that means I have a desire to show off or that I am insecure.

It does if you haven't seen them side by side together in real life. Side by side there's a difference and once you see it, you know. I do understand what you mean though as a white gold Daytona without it's precious metal characteristics can look like ss indoors where lighting may be ambient or dim.

The other thing about white gold is the feel. The feel of the gold is completely different and a huge allure. I for one would welcome a white gold model as it is a little more under the radar to the normal bystander who couldn't even identify a Rolex from an Invicta.

There is a difference though but lighting helps identifying the difference. If a person switched the dial and bezel on an 116619 to to black, you wouldn't be able to spot the difference in say a restaurant but you sure could feel it if they passed it to you.

You really need to handle and wear one of these.. Once you have done that, report back too us, i'm sure your view on it being like steel will be different

Completely different feel to steel. Completely different hue and tone that comes from the metal.

Heres a good example of the yellow hue..

I used to have the same thoughts as you on WG, until I tried one...

Great pic, Dino! This is how the watch looks in real life...bright, warm, and flashy.

Go for the YELLOW gold Sub with blue sunburst dial! Much more impressive IMO. I tried on a white gold Sub at the AD, and while nice it is not 36K nice.
