Man Made Ruby Value
Hi guys,
My very good friend is looking to have a ruby engagement ring made. We have found several people that can make the ring design that he wants, but we're having trouble sourcing a good ruby. His budget is around $5k, and a jeweler we know wants him to buy a man made ruby. The jeweler says that man made rubies range in price from pennies to tens of thousands of dollars, but I can't find much information on them and anything I can find online has them priced very low, around $30/ct. My concern is that he may be getting taken for a ride by spending $5k on the ring with a synthetic ruby (the ring will cost under $2k to make, so the jeweler is selling the synthetic ruby for $3k+). Just FYI, he is looking for around a 1ct, blood red, eye clean, cushion cut ruby. Any information you guys can provide is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!!! |

You might try the website Price Scope to look for colored gemstone values. They have lots of information there, but I don't think they discuss man-made stones too much just as this site doesn't discuss fake watches.
Also, another alternative to a ruby might be a red spinel. They too can be expensive, but spinels look as nice as rubies and are usually much cheaper. http://www.pricescope.com/ Then look under the forums tab for colored gemstones. Good Luck, Tim |

I'm really hoping someone in the jewelry industry will comment. He's definitely looking for a ruby only. Thanks!! |

He shouldn't have too much difficulty getting a natural ruby for that price unless he insists on a lab created one.
My best advice would be for him to contact the nearest jeweler who is a member of the American Gem Society about it. |

I am hoping someone will know if there is any value in a lab created ruby, or better yet, if someone on here actually deals in rubies. Thanks!!! |
