Hawaii trip and watches
Been away from the forums for a bit to get unplugged (if there is such a thing) for a family vacation to Hawaii. Truly enjoyed Hawaii and got to visit Oahu and Maui. Truly beautiful place with stunning scenery everywhere and amazing beaches, which kept me away from the internet for the most part, but of course I had to try and check out some watches while I was there
Very happy that I was able to check out some models that aren't available where I live, and the places I visited was more than friendly. So I thought I'd share some of my photos and hope you enjoy. Majority of content is Patek so decided to post it in this sub-forum, but mods, please feel free to move the thread if there is somewhere more appropriate. I was jet lagged when I arrived so what better way to start off the trip than to head out to the beach at dawn? I decided to go with my trusty G-Shock for this trip and it definitely survived everything I threw at it We hiked up Diamond Head and was rewarded with a great view of the city. The sunset overlooking Honolulu was spectacular! Now onto some watches. I was able to try on the 5205G as unfortunately the store did not have a 5205R available. Next, a 5170J manual wind chronograph. After trying on a friend's 5070R recently, I must say the 5170J pales a bit in comparison, but still a great watch and of course amazing movement. Then I tried on a 5140G perpetual calendar. At 37mm it does wear a bit smaller, but I loved the dial color and the superbly balanced dial and sub-dials. I definitely liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Next, a bit of JLC. First time I was able to handle the Tribute to Reverso 1831 in person and I absolutely love it. Such a classic dress watch and I was so tempted to bring it home with me, but resisted in the end. And just as I was about to leave the store, the great sales rep pulls something out of the drawer and shows me the stunning 5496P-014, and my jaw dropped at that point in time. WOW! Even under the sealed bag the watch is spectacular, and the weight of the platinum is addictive. The dial is amazing and great size too! It definitely made my day as I didn't think I would be able to see this 5496P in person. The sales rep told me they just received it and probably won't last too long in the store, and he's probably right. We also managed to have some fun on the trip, and zip lining on the North Shore was definitely one of them. Lots of fun and a great way to enjoy the scenery. Love the food trucks on the island! I had always been interested in learning about WWII and so really enjoyed visiting Pearl Harbor and paying respect to the lives lost there. Hanauma Bay was another stunning place that we visited. Okay, back to more watches. Another watch that I was really happy I got to see in person was the IWC minute repeater. This version is in Pink Gold, and the case is much much taller than I expected. Unfortunately it was all wrapped up so I wasn't able to test the chimes. Also tried on the 5001 7 Day Portuguese but not quite the same after having the minute repeater on the wrist Last but not least, probably one of my favorite photos from the trip, taken in Maui. Had to wake up at 3:30AM and drive 1.5 hours from sea level to 10,000 ft in elevation in darkness on narrow winding roads to the top of Mount Haleakala, where the temperature dropped from 27 degrees to 5 degrees celsius (80 to 40 in Fahrenheit), and where we waited for an hour. But the result is a spectacular sunrise where we were on the summit and above cloud level, and it was truly one of the most memorable sunrises I've seen. Hope you enjoy the photos! |

Wow. My favorite place in world. Look like you had a blast. The 5496 is superb. That 5205g is my favorite dial choice, even more so than the Black dial R.

Nice pics, last time in Hawaii was 11 years a go ! Wow times flys. And yes is easier to find the G versions with the AD's the R versions are more sought after and therefore harder to find. I love the 5496P-014, that honey dial is amazing !

Thanks Fred!
Yes, definitely enjoyed my first time in Hawaii, want to go back already! Thanks! Thanks! Thanks, and the 5496P was stunning. Patek calls it a "honey brown" dial, it's almost like a sunburst bronze color, hard to describe, but definitely not gold in color. Quote:
Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! |
