Need your opinions

I would be interested to know your opinions of the 1675 movement in the GMT Master. How it compares to other movements, etc..(Vintage 1968, ser. #198XXX) I'm trying to educate myself!
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Tom,

There are those watchmakers in this hobby that feel the 15xx movements were the FINEST movements ever made by Rolex. They have been described as "over engineered monsters" that can take punishment all out of proportion to others.

I have used/worn GMT-MASTERS and other references with 1575 movements for over 40 years through some really horrible conditions and have never had a problem. They're rock hard and tough as nails not to mention STILL capable of accuracy that rivals anything made today.

If there is any down side it's a personal one in that many early 1575s (including the 68 GMT--which I have--bought it brand new) are non-hacking. Though with a slight back pressure you can "hack" them.

Some examples I used over the years--and still do,

Mike, I should probably know this but what is the "non-hacking" aspect of the 1575 that you refer to?
BTW, thanks for educating this novice!! Your pictures/collection are awesome.

"Hacking" is the feature whereby pulling the crown out to the setting position freezes the seconds hand allowing the watch to be synced to a known time source. While most feel this was introduced to the sports line in the early 70s known examples exist of the 15xx movement dating to 1965 (albeit not a sports model).

It's possible to freeze the seconds hand on non-hack versions with slight back pressure on the crown to sync the watch--does no harm.
