Buying used

What are your opinions on buying used? Im after buying my first rolex and feel that buying used is the best way for me as it avoids the initial depreciation. However when buying used, I would want to buy it with everything that it comes with when new i.e. box, tags etc.

Also when buying used, is it risky as the watch could potentially be a stolen good?

Fortunately this is one of the rare occassions where you can have the cake and eat it to.

There is nothing wrong with buying used. I would suggest that you purchase from a reputable source and possibly meet at a Rolex dealer to have it verified. If the seller knows it is stolen I doubt he/she would even show up.

Agree
You can buy a BNIB here from a trusted seller if that's the route you wish to take

Also Official watches, Hackett, Iconic and Top Notch Watches. They all resell new unworn watches from the EU at large discounts like the TRF trusted sellers in USA. No need to buy used ones unless you want 20% plus off.

Top notch watches offered me some a good deal on a BNIB 116600, £1400 off RRP.

20% is quite easily obtained on a BNIB SS Rolex in the UK with EU papers, don't settle for anything less.

Perhaps not on a sub or daytona though? SD yes but not the SS subs. I've never been so lucky to find someone doing 20% off those.

But 20% is quite common for TT or some variations of SS DJ and the explorer range.

Sorry but you are wrong. I purchased a brand new sub ND for a AD for £4050, retail is £5000 so more or less 20%, the only model they will not do with 20% off is the BLNR which can be bought for £5200 if I remember correctly. This is also not grey market dealers but an AD that is on Rolex website.

I must add this is dependant on the exchange rate on the day, but certainly all the SS model can be had with around a 20% saving.

If you can get the full set when buying used.
I believe the chance of it being stolen is not very high.

Have the watch evaluated at a watch maker assures you that the internals are genuine.

I would be comfortable buying used here from a trusted seller. Fully papered if at all possible. If you go other directions you already have some good advice already in this thread. If you go say the Ebay route do a lot of research on the seller. I have seen lately a lot of dissatisfaction with some of the bigger Ebay Rolex sellers. You can also research them here on this forum. Seems there's a lot of Frankenwatches out there with parts of other watches or after market parts on them. You have to be careful and pro active in your search buying used. Caveat Emptor

Lots of trusted established sellers have great used watches that are complete and would back their product against defects.

I would just say to buy the seller. You should also research what these watches sell for used.

If you buy from a trusted dealer on TRF you do not have to worry about it being stolen or counterfeit.

Edit: I see some references to eBay, I find the watches very overpriced there. However, over the years eBay has changed policies and you are safer than you think in case a seller takes you for a ride.

Noting wrong at all with buying used. But a few things you need to keep in mind - as mentioned already but I think cannot be mentioned enough - buy from a reputable seller. That is paramount.

Also - sometimes you may not be able to get the box and all the 'goodies'. Which is not that big of a deal...I've bought a couple of pieces used with no box and papers. BUT I prefer.

Check out some of the trusted sellers here...I have to say had this forum been around over the years I would have JUMPED at it!!!

You can find some good buys here and on a handful of Internet sites on pre-owned models. Just do your homework, as the most frequent complaint with buying used seems to be the discrepancy between the seller's definition of "excellent" condition and the buyer's.

A local friend of mine just ran into this issue recently with a Sub he purchased from a pre-owned dealer online, not on this forum. Fortunately he inspected the watch and immediately sent it back for a refund, as the seller's description of its condition was not at all accurate.

Another GREAT point!!!

Inspecting the watch is critical. Make sure it is not over polished!!! That's a biggie. I have seen some where you almost can't even make out the Rolex crown on the winding crown! As well as the lugs.

I would take the descriptions from the dealers mentioned with a pinch of salt, what is often advertised as great or mint condition is often not the case when you receive the watch, normally they are over polished and require servicing. I personally would look at getting a full set UK watch with original receipt from the original owner and meet them in a RSC if possible, if you get a link changed Rolex as a matter of cause check the stolen register.

You can also look for BNIB deals in the Classifieds section. But as others noted - buy the seller first. Do research, check with others who bought from them.

I made numerous transactions from DavidSW, Mark (theken), and others on this forum after I purchased my first watch in store.

Good luck and remember to post your picture here when you get it.
