Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum, so I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm looking for a watch to purchase for myself to commemorate my college graduation. I have a few nice watches (Tissot Visodate, Hamilton Navy Pioneer, vintage Longines, Nomos Tangente), but I want to buy my first "luxury watch." After going to different stores and boutiques I have narrowed my choices down to 3: Rolex Explorer 39mm, Rolex Milgauss (not sure on white dial or GV), and Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Master Co-Axial 41.5mm. Ideally I would like my first luxury watch to have anti-magnetic properties since I am graduating with a bachelors and masters in electrical engineering. I want the anti-magnetic property because it relates to my field, rather than practically using it.

After going to the Rolex boutique, I found that the Milgauss and Explorer I are the only Rolex models that I like. I'm not a fan of the cyclops or the complications associated with the GMT and Submariner. I love the simplicity of the Explorer I and the Milgauss.

This brings me to my dilemma. If I get the Explorer, I won't want the Milgauss because I would prefer to diversify my collection rather than purchase multiple watches of the same brand. I would also purchase the Aqua Terra along with the Explorer because I do want a watch with anti-magnetic properties. Of course, this would be a lot more expensive than just purchasing the Milgauss. So should I save a little more money and purchase the Explorer and Aqua Terra, or kill two birds with one stone and purchase the Milgauss? If so, which Milgauss model would be the most versatile? Keep in mind, I have already tried on all of these watches and love how they look on my wrist.

Any input or opinions would be appreciated!

I prefer the Explorer, but it sounds like with the field yu have chosen, the Milgauss is a no brainer.

I don't have the means to do so right now. I have the means to buy one of them, but if I decide it is the better option, I would save more money and purchase the two.

My pick would be a 2500 Aqua Terra (I own one and have tried on the 8500 - they are too bulky for a dressy watch IMO) and a explorer/submariner!!

Did you really try on a exp? I was very disappointed when I tried it on. ALSO be aware there are some awesome models out that are discontinued. 14060M submariner comes to mind - similar to the dimensions of the exp.

Anyway, take what we say with a grain of salt - at the end of the day, you want what you want. I wanted to get my submariner so I asked the board. Lots of people told me to get the new ceramic sub but I knew in my heart I wanted the aluminum one and I am so happy with my decision. Good luck and welcome to TRF!

Yep! I tried on the 39mm Explorer at Torneau. It was definitely lighter than the Milgauss. I also have never seen the older 36mm to compare it to. I like it because it is very simple and classy. I feel like it could be worn with anything. I also feel the same about the Milgauss, except the Milgauss comes with the anti-magnetic feature and a heftier price tag.

Milgauss agreed. Don't automatically get the GV...try the different color options multiple times in person with different shirts before you decide.

I agree with you. If I were to get the Milgauss it would be between the white dial and the GV. I'm not a fan of the blue dial.

Milgauss GV was my first good watch and I'm from EE background as well so antimagnetic property and faraday cage was appealing. It's a very nice watch, wore it for ~4 years, got a few comments once in a while. But now my taste has changed somewhat and it doesn't see much wrist time anymore. Between exp and GV, I vote for GV, but I'm not too familiar with the omegas,

I briefly owned a Milgauss and I definitely miss it. Given your career the Milgauss makes the most sense. It would also be more representative of you. I rarely recommend the Milgauss as a first Rolex given its unique character but for you I suggest it without reservation. I'd go with the black dial GV.

the AT is actually anti-magnetic (as in movement and everything) where as the milgauss just 'shields' the otherwise 'normal' movement if that matters at all in your consideration...

I would not buy a watch purely because it has something to do with my field of work. I did in the past, I won't do it anymore. I like my job, but in the end it is a job, it takes up a lot of my free time. Don't need a watch to remind me of that fact

Having said that, the Milgauss is a beauty, but I went for the Explorer. I was not sure about the green glass and the second pointer in the long run. Also with hindsight, I would not want a polished bracelet!

If I was starting again with luxury watches, I'd go straight for Rolex. For me, Omega (including an AT) was just a stepping stone along the way to Rolex that, with hindsight, I should have skipped.

I own the Milgauss GV and the 36mm Exp 1. They contain similar movements so, yeah, owning both is a bit of duplication really.

Anyway, I'd definitely recommend the Milgauss. I love my GV, but if it was a daily wearer I'm not sure about the constant green. Depends if you like the white dial or not. The discontinued black/clear Milgauss is really nice and can be found second hand for a good price. But then the green is pretty special. Either way, it's a fantastic piece, you can't go wrong.
