Buying my first Rolex 1665 or 116600 (4000)

Hi one and all,

My first choice would be 1665, but I do want a Rolex that is reliable and one that I can wear often.

The models I have been considering:
1665, 1665 rail, 16660 matte, 16660 gloss trit dial, 116600 (4000)

I don't mind keeping my powder dry, and saving more pennies to buy the right watch.

All and any advice and points of view will be greatly appreciated.

Regards, fario

If u dont plan to swim with it, definitely get the 1665 rail or no. Classic. It will last u a life time if properly serviced.

If a 1665 is the watch you really want, then that's what I would recommend you purchase...

i would go for a 1665 or 16660 matte unless you have something very similar. that being said, i think 16600s (and to a slightly lesser extent WG surround 16660s) are fantastic buys under $5k.

I second the great value of 16600's right now, however if you want a matte dial then you only have 2 pricey options.

I would go for the 116600 as a daily wearer, fantastic rock solid piece, and turn to vintage later.

looks great on the jubilee! im curious how common 16600s were during production years vs 16710s. a pepsi 16710 seems to command a slight premium to the 16600. anyone have any idea how many 16710s and 16600s were made for every 16610? i never see 16600s on wrists but see 16610s all the time; pepsi 16710s are only very slightly more common than 16600s.

Thank you! I am really enjoying it on the Jubilee. It sits so well on the wrist with it. I also, would love to know the ratio to 16610's if anyone has any insight.

Agreed on the 16600s being good buys. I picked up one recently after a long search (I wanted all tritium), but I didn't see ANY in decent shape for under $5K. Look to spend closer to the $6K range for a good one, a little more with boxes/papers. And note that the prices seem to be going up for the old-style SDs in general, so I wouldn't wait too long. Good luck in your hunt!

Perfectly acceptable to wear a 1665 every day without any shread of fear or trepidation..

I do.

There is the risk of damaging a 1665 if you intend to go swimming
The plexi is subject to cracking and you would want a recent service to be sure the crown is safe for swimming. Not really worth the risk.

Probably 16600 if going just for one - great all rounder that covers just about everything, and with lower risk than some of the more vintage models such as the 1665.

I own both. I love both.

But for my day to day work environment, I find that the 1665 gets alot more wrist time because the 116600 has so many shiny parts that its alittle too blingy for me. I like that the 1665 is under the radar. Ironic that a good conditioned ole 1665 is worth nearly 50% more than a mint modern 116600.

One more thing, looking at sea dwellers dials online is one thing, but feeling the perfect heft and fit in person versus other rolex models and between versions is totally another.

Enjoy the hunt.

The 1665 gets the win in my book. Very wearable and one my favorite "daily" watches out there.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to say how much I have appreciated the great feedback, thoughts and advice, as I march towards purchasing my first Rolex.

My conclusions . . . I'm definitely going V I N T A G E

My first choice hasn't changed from my original post . . . 1665

However, I am a few pennies short and thought maybe I should buy a Vintage Sub, so that I can experience the joy and pleasures of wearing a vintage Rolex, and perhaps trade up to the 1665 at a later date . . . or better still, keep both!

I was thinking of a later model 5513 matte, trit.

Would love to receive your recommendations and reasons, if you wanted to suggested another model.

Many thanks . . . fario

I think a 1665 and a 116600 are not comparable - holding both watches in one hand will bring you that clear feeling.
If you want the tough one, 6 digits is better than 4 digits. If you love the dome, there is no more question.

What he said!
I'll add for what it's worth that the 666 is my personal favorite. Well serviced you can rely on it in all situations. Has the full-on vintage feel while modern, if that makes sense.
