Icon20 gmt II question...

hey fellow forum members...

considering the gmt II is discontinued... is it worth holding out to find and buy, a late z or early m series example (with the new movement)?

i ask this as i recently found a brand new z series (early example with the old movement)...which has all the stickers on it... sitting in an ADs safe since march 2007.

to be honest im not so clued up as to the differences between the z and m series... apart from the latter series has the better movement?

please can you offer your advice...

ps the watch is at the z series list price of £2800.

If you really want the new movement, it might be an adventure to shop around for one.. although I'll bet that you can't really tell without looking on the inside. (I don't really believe the "wiggle test" is 100% failproof.)

If you really want a GMT, then I don't think you should pass up a good deal.

Harvey, I see that you've deleted the GMT from your collection under your signature line - does this mean that you're still shopping around?

Just curious.

I'd get it, but try to get the price further down by asking for 10 % discount.

Ive heard much about the wiggle test, and looked at the thread BO forwarded me too, but i still dont get it. Does it refer to the 'lag' in the hour hand when adjusting, illiminated by thenew spring?

No...The new hairspring is simply a Rolex in-house development to wean themselves from outsourcing to Nivarox for this item, of course, the Parachrom spring is a quality product, but the hairspring has no part of the 'wiggle' test.

Rolex has also changed tolerances somewhat in the 3186 movement so, it is said, if you pull the stem out to set the Mercedes hand, the movement itself is more stable and the tips of the 24 hr hand won't move (wriggle) during this procedure.

thanks guys for your comments. i guess ive just got cold feet and need reassurance... as this would be another rolex purchase within 2 weeks of the last one. maybe i feel guilty? not sure.

if i dont buy it my brother wants it...so he is itching for me to decide!

neil i took it off my collection list... as i felt i should only include those i have, rather the ones im going to get...otherwise it looks like a santas wishlist lol

Harvey, I understand where you're coming from here - it can be so easy to get carried away. It's a strange thing, isn't it, that as soon as you get one Rolex that you've been looking forward to getting for ages, you're on the lookout for the next one - we've all been there.

Look at me - within 6 months, I'd amassed the three that I currently own.

I'd sit back and enjoy the 2 stunners that you've got at the moment - mind you, your brother will dine out for months winding you up with the GMT that you almost had, when it's on his wrist not yours.

its incredible i sourced the watch i wanted. albeit the AD was mistaken, rather than it being 3 months old its 13 months old. maybe i was looking for an excuse to get the z series as i initially thought it was a m series.

buying rolexes is certainly a sickness. as i only bought my sd 2 weeks... buying the gmt caused some anxiety...as i got 2 rolexes already. to counter balance this i went to the other extreme and even thought about selling the lv and just keeping the sd! this is complete madness!

Harvey, mate... Forget about rational thinking. It's an addiction that you're trying to quell. I am currently thinking of my next one - either a TT DJ or a ND COSC sub.
