Why isn't the deepsea blue more popular?
Just not seeing a lot of talk about this watch... Is it the price? Is it the color? Availability?
Fact it is selling actually cheaper at AD's then trusted sellers here? What gives? |

It is a really thick watch and the priciest Rolex SS watch (or somewhere around what a Daytona costs). Beyond that, some find the whole 'commemorative' thing a bit gimmicky... like something Omega would do.

The latter part of this is bang on. Special editions are cheesy, and yeah very Omega.

I think it's a very cool watch and the Deep Blue dial to me makes it even cooler

Too bulky for me and no need for the function it provides. Other than that it is a beauty.

I've always loved the Deepsea and when the D Blue came out I thought it was even better......... Definitely on my hit list. But not for a while.

Maybe the d blue will be kind of like the PN Daytona. Not that popular at first but really popular in 30-40 years?

I first heard about the DSSD in the summer of 2008 while I was deployed. Saw some pics and just then I decided I was going to have one no matter what. Bought mine in 2010 and still love it today. Then I saw the release of the DSSD Blue and thought for a minute I'd trade mine in for the newer model. In the end I decided to keep what I had as it is still as beautiful the day I received it from FedEx (thanks Oscar!).
I like the Deep Blue but not enough to lose my original DSSD. Best part for me is the green color on the dial. |

I thought it was overly popular, hard to source and generally hyped. I think it is a fun and cool piece, but if I had to chose with my hard earned dollars I'd get a regular DSSD which has a street price of $3,000. It is a cool dial, but I'm not sure it is worth $3K for me personally...

In 7hrs I will be starting the journey to hopefully pick up "mine". Every watch I have purchased I have known within 12 seconds whether it will be "the one", however long I spent procrastinating afterwards. Looking forward to updating this thread tomorrow. The pros and cons expressed on this thread exactly match my own thoughts; I won't know until I see it in the metal tomorrow. EXCITING.
I am now going to make a substantial donation to charity (for those in the UK - the RNLI !!) to assuage my guilt over ridiculous first world problems |

I prefer it over the black dial version and love it in concept but after trying one on, it felt ridiculous. That and the stupid amount of text on it.
It's like strapping a hockey puck to your wrist. The bracelet taper doesn't help either. People laugh at huge watches and the deepsea is massive but somehow it is acceptable because it is a Rolex. That being said, with unlimited funds and after acquiring the 20-30 watches I would have before it, I would buy one. Yeah, it looks like a giant sub, but if there was a watch that I would call a tank, it would be the deepsea.

I would be under the impression that it is a very popular model. It seems to me that a lot of people around here really like it and there have been a lot of people who have bought it. I think it's a great reference and much prefer it to the black one. I think the blue and green on the dial look great and give it that extra something that I always thought the original was missing. I don't think I would ever buy the black dial but I would love a D-Blue

I really like the DSSD; the tie-in with James Cameron really kills the Deep Blue for me. So, I fall into the gimmicky category

I love the DSSD and the Blue version looks fantastic IMO.
However, a $3-$4k markup for that dial is just too hard to swallow at the moment. |

Another vote for the insane markup. $3-4000 just for a different dial is out of control. Someone in the parts forum recently sold a deep blue dial for $5K. The SDDS isn't for everyone and the extra cost makes it less desirable, IMHO.

I think the D-Blue is certainly a marmite watch (it divides opinion) but to say it is "unpopular" doesn't seem to match up to the facts-
1. There is a waiting list for the piece at AD's. 2. Most are pre-sold before they arrive at AD's. 3. The Specialist/grey market dealers are selling the piece for more than RRP. 4. Pre-Owned pieces on eBay are selling for BNIB RRP at the lowest and some pre owned are changing hands for more than RRP. I would say these points mean we should probably consider the D-Blue popular rather than unpopular. |

And I believe that like the Daytona they sell at a premium to the MRSP, which for me is a huge turn-off, even if I really like the watch. |

Totally agree with you on this.
Waiting lists at all AD's I've inquired at for them. Used reg DSSD's going for around $8500 Used d-blue DSSD's going for around $12500

I assume that in time these will return to earth as far as pricing goes.
What is regular retail at an AD on the blue dial DSSD? |
