Introduction From A Newbie
Hi Guys,
I'm a recent member but have lurked here for a few weeks. Before saying anything, I figured I'd keep my mouth shut & learn a few things first. I'm sure this was advice from my Father many moons ago. Anyway, I thought I should introduce myself a little. I've loved watches all my life, something about the workmanship & reliability. Never had much to speak about in terms of timepieces, but always had an eye for the Rolex Sub. Simple but effective design, prolific reputation & durability. They were always just a bit out of reach & I guess something always took the place when I had the coin. I'm sure many of you have been there. Well now I find myself making excuses for other things with the singular thought of getting my first Rolex. I was inadvertently offered a vintage Pepsi GMT by a co-worker. He was the original owner & had taken care of it like it was a child. Recently serviced, he decided it was time to let it go & was in love all over again. While scrounging up the funds, he apologized saying after thinking about it, he had decided it wasn't time to sell just yet. He was looking for around $4K which I thought was fine considering I knew him & his penchant for taking care of things & since all else was original. When he decided to pull the piece, I was in a dilemma, what to do? new GMT II? Vintage GMT? I really don't leave this time zone but it's a damn fine looking watch. Should I go back to my first love, the Sub? I still dive from time to time & have always loved the design. Or what about this new beast, the Sea Dweller? All seemed worthy of my affection. I guess it's between the Sub & SD & as many of you can imagine, I'm like a kid putting something on a Christmas list for Santa. At this point, I don't know what I'll come home with but I know it'll be something I'll keep for a long time. Probably something that'll have friends too because this hobby seems to be addictive. I enjoy reading this site very much, many thanks for all your help & sage advice. |

Welcome to TRF, Billy!
Sorry to hear about your being so close to getting the Pepsi GMT II. Anyway, since you seem to love the SS Sub Date, I would go for it. As you state, it's a classic icon from Rolex that you will never get tired of. The SD 16600 could also be an option if you like a Rolex not having the cyclops (personally, I prefer that). Best of luck with your decision and please do post pics of your Rolex once you get it!

Welcome to TRF, Billy.
"...I figured I'd keep my mouth shut & learn a few things first. I'm sure this was advice from my Father many moons ago..." Indeed good advice from your Dad when checking out any new forum! Best of luck in your final decision regarding a Rolex purchase. Just keep in mind - whatever your choice (except the ClownMaster II, of course) will be a good one!

Welcome to TRF, Billy. Your funds put you pretty close to a decent used Submariner, GMT and you have enough now for an Explorer II. Try them all on, and imagine wearing each for the next several decades. That will help you decide which one is best for you!
