Apple Watch vs/ Rolex

The attached brief article (see link below) is spot on. I have owned and enthusiastically worn Rolex watches since 1977. But, in the last 3 months, since I first strapped on my Apple Watch on April 24, 2015, I have not worn my DD-II. I can’t say I never will wear my DD II again, but I agree with this fellow that the numerous, and increasing almost daily, conveniences of the AW are really starting to add up to “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” scenario.

The apple watch seems nice, but here is why Rolex is better:

It can go longer than 12 hours without a "charge"
I can go swimming with it
It's not dependent on my iPhone to be functional
I can "upgrade" my Rolex to a newer Rolex. The iwatch is worthless when it leaves the store
It's just damn sexy to strap onto my wrist
Yes the parts are mass produced, but it's still a work of art to have a human put it together and still be accurate -4/+6 seconds.
My son can wear my Rolex in 20 years and still look good
My grandson/granddaughter (which ever I will be blessed with) can wear my Rolex in 50 years and still look good.

The apple watch is nice, but Rolex still has it beat

True, however the apple watch has a massive amount of features that a Rolex does not have. Also given how cheap the entry and mid level Apple watches are and that you can recoup 50% of the cost on the used market, upgrading to the new model when it comes out next year is very justifiable.
Also the 2 should really never be compared. One is a smart watch and a productivity aid while the other is a classic luxury timepiece. Many people I know at work (tech industry) wear a normal watch on one wrist and an apple watch on the other (simply leaving it at work to charge when they go home at the end of the day, putting it on when they return the next morning).

True, but when looking at all the things it still can't do, the 50% cost of the apple watch isn't worth it. My son can't wear an apple watch in 20 years and have someone say, "Wow, nice watch."

With all the other tech in our lives, I'd much rather have an analog piece of equipment on my wrist, that (IMHO) looks way better. My iPhone can do everything and more than the iwatch. It's no hardship on me to reach down six inches and pull my phone from my pocket to to pay, read, text, take pictures, talk.

Yes, the AW is a convenience, but there's nothing sexy about it. I often find myself glancing down at my wrist/Rolex just because...Just because it's so nice to look at and admire.

One is a device while the other is a timepiece--if apple watches are still around in the next hundred years, I'll revisit this debate :)

I agree with the notion here that it's not really a 1:1 comparison between the two. For one, the Rolex was made to be a time keeping piece first and foremost - the art is behind mechanical movement and durability in w/e endeavor they created it for. I doubt Apple wanted to make a time piece, they wanted to make "wearable technology" (which apparently the tech market is headed towards) and to incorporate their plethora of functions in a convenient package which happened to be in the form of a watch.

I would also imagine that ppl who are buying apple watches will still buy it whether it had a time keeping function or not.

So just because both go on the wrist, doesn't mean they are both up for comparison.

All in the eyes of the beholder I guess, my non-WIS coworkers certainly think the Apple watch looks quite good

In the end, it's what you want to feel on your wrist...what you want to see when you look down there. I'll admit it, sometimes when I look at my watch I still don't know what time it is. Those things are more important to me than taking the extra 2 seconds to reach into my pocket for my wallet or phone. But that's me.

Unless something revolutionary happens with the Apple watch, I don't see that changing for me.

The biggest difference? Apple is hoping you'll buy and buy and buy again as they come out with new versions every year. Rolex knows you only need one.

I agree with you... although there will be A LOT of members on TRF going into cardiac arrest if you tell them they can only have ONE

Been there, done that.
Unlike OP, I got rid of my Apple Watch in four weeks.
Compare it to my Rolex? Piss in my pants laughing.
And this is coming from an Apple Fan Boy.

The Apple watch is a disposable gadget. It is useful no doubt. It will be replaced in 12-18 mos and be obsolete. The under capacity battery will fade to uselessness after 300 or so charge cycles and it is not replaceable. If the watch gets damaged, toss it in the trash and get a new one.

In 10 years the Rolex (or any other fine time piece) will just be ready for its first service to get spiffed up to essentially original condition.

Major Apple fan here too. Been so for a long time. Still keep a dual G4 powermac set up and running, but the apple watch isn't even on my radar. They are just a modern version of the Casio data bank and will only be cool to hipsters in 25 years.

Hear hear.... you took the words right out of my mouth. I remember being a kid and being obsessed by Casio data bank, while my dad was obsessed with his mechanical watches. Being a boy I never really found out why he did not think my watch was cool.

Years later here I am, and I'd never let a technology filled watch replace a fine time piece (And unlike most people on these forums I am at the age where all my mates want the apple watch).

The bottom line is if i wanted a technologically advanced watch, I would have stuck with my Casio till smart watches were made, and than just switched to smart watches. But that wont happen because those things have nothing on these fine mechanical time pieces

Yes, but we buy different models of Rolexes, plus different brands. All tell time, some have date functions, others have chrono functions, others have ac or pc functions, etc. TRF never tries to convince anyone to buy more than one of a given model.

I am also a big Apple consumer. I got one for Fathers Day and have worn it 4-5 days. Some how can't really like it when I have a collection of Rolex and Panerai at home. Just nothing that special for me. For me it lacks soul. I know a lot of folks that wear it and love it. Honestly reading the article makes me LMAO. How hard is it to reach into your pocket to use the phone???
