Anyone else think that Vintage Fat Font Inserts are Overpriced?
Last month, I sourced a Fat Font MK3 Ghost Insert for ... now brace yourself... $1000 !!
This is just for the insert and not the bezel + Insert. Last week I sourced a Ghost Insert + Bezel for my Omega Seamaster for $40. Yes that's right $40. Anyone else think that these FF inserts are going for Moon Money? Any theories on why the huge disparity in price?

Supply and demand as well as many were changed out through the years since they are fairly cheap from rolex and most people didn't want a faded bezel 30,40 sometimes 50 years ago

So.. what you're saying is, I need to visit all the old watchmakers in my town and see if they have any old crappy bezels and inserts sitting around in the parts bin ??

That's where most would be to find I'd imagine. I doubt many people are popping them off their watches

Yep - one is Rolex, and the other is Omega!
In a word; demand. Nice, BTW.

As long as folks keep paying outrageous prices they will continue to be so.

A few years from now a thousand dollars might seem a bargain.

Some of the prices we pay for vintage Rolex parts are eye-watering. It's starting to spill over into Omega now too. Rolex prices took a walk off the map a long time ago, but some vintage Omegas are still holding on. However, vintage Speedmasters are chugging their way up to some obscene prices though

I don't know if they're overpriced, but soooooo glad mine came with its original.
The service insert and black leather strap weren't cutting it. |

Watches, like anything else that becomes collectible, can become expensive when attempting to source original parts that are out of production and found in limited quantities. Obviously supply and demand along with condition is the driving force behind the price of original vintage dials, hands, bracelets and bezel inserts to name just a few of the coveted vintage parts. While more and more collectors strive to have a correct vintage watch, the prices will continue to escalate for the parts that they covet and search for most to make their obsession period correct.
If it's been said once, it's been said a hundred times, "they ain't makin' this stuff anymore." Below is a "fatty" I found locally earlier this week. I guess I'll have to start getting out of the house more often!

the world is a funny old place , full of funny folk , , it would be a strange place if we were all the same , one mans junk is another mans treasure.
its hard to see the value in some things sometimes. but beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. |

It's necessary to complete the watch. A skinny / service font just doesn't cut it.

Everything vintage Rolex is going up! It's absurd, but not all that surprising, really. And what's up with GMTs? Nice non-gilt 1675s suddenly seem to be more expensive than 5513 Subs and pushing the $10K mark. Even the discontinued sapphire GMTs are going way up. Crazy.
I bought this insert for my old GMT for $200 about three years ago. I sold it (just the insert) earlier this year for $750, and now I think I underpriced it. (I don't even want to say what I sold the watch for. I should have kept it.) |

I have a Fat Font MK3 on my 5513 (not faded), have been looking for a Long 5 insert. The long 5's have been going for 950 plus, didn't realize I could possibly recoup some of the costs with the MK3..... good to know
