Very nicely illustrated and researched piece. But one paragraph about the text on the dials confuses "relief" as part of the technique for painting dials.

In the article the word relief is used to describe the text being below the dial's black paint. "While some dial manufacturers might paint the text on the colored surface of the dial, those making the dials for the Rolex Submariner and the GMT did so in a way that the gold colored text and features are in relief or below the surface instead of on top."

Relief, or relievo rilievo, is a sculptural technique as used in coins, for example. The term relief is from the Latin verb relevo, to raise. So the text would be on top of the black paint to be in relief (which I believe is where the "gilt" paint is deposited).

A tiny niggle in an otherwise great article.
