Value of Rolex.

When I ask non-Rolex owners how much they think a steel Rolex costs, many of them say "must be over $1000"...

When I ask "what about a gold Rolex" most say in the region of $5000-10,000...

It concerns me that I will have spent in the region of $10,000 on a steel Rolex and people will only think it is worth "at least $1,000"...or if I purchased a gold Rolex for $30,000+ they will think I only have 5-10,000 on my wrist

In other words random members of the public think a gold rolex is worth what in reality you could not even purchase a steel Rolex for!!

What are your opinions on this and do you think this should affect whether I buy a gold Rolex.

Of no concern to me!

If you purchased a Rolex with the hope people would think you are rich, or spent X amount of dollars, you are buying the watch for all the wrong reasons.

You're worried that people won't appreciate how much you've spent on your Rolex?
I know it's not cool to say "First World Problems" anymore but....

I'm happy about this!

I don't want people wanting to rip me off. Both for the watch and during business dealings!!!!

I found that people seem to think that a Rolex watch is worth more than it really is, not less. Totally different experience.

Doesn't strike me as important either way.

Honestly, I don't really care if other people know how much my watch costs, and I think most people on this forum would agree with me.

A Rolex shouldn't be judged by its perceived worth.

Don't worry what others think one way or the other.

I wonder what non watch people think my forged carbon APs were "OOooo Sporty, thinking its a cool g shock equivalent. If you want non watch people (single women I presume) to think you spent a TON on a watch, buy a 48mm diamond slathered breitling or equiv.

Agreed, couldnt care less....

Perceived VS real.... What motivates us.... Always interesting discussions.....

I find that even if it were 1K, people still think its too much for a watch...

Don't bother about what others think of the value of the watch. I like to keep things to myself so it's even better when they think it's that much cheaper. Doesn't attract all that attention in terms of price.

Just let it go and enjoy it

This is also a concern of mine. Whenever I meet somebody new, I'll shake with my left hand, hold their hand tightly and point to my wrist with my right finger. I'll say something along the lines of "That's a $10,000 watch you're looking at."

I usually get dirty looks, but I assume they're just jealous of how awesome I am.

Good let them think that, but why even bother to ask them what they think you have spent on a watch. The only question I would like them to ask me is, 'what time is it'.

Most people that do not know me personally and somehow manage to notice I'm wearing a Rolex assume it is fake. I absolutely love it!

Those that know me and are aware of the legitimacy don't care and think I'm an idiot for spending so much. I absolutely love that too!

Well they say the Bill of material + (manufacturing hours non swiss) is from 70dlls to 500dlls.
Having said that, the brand and the 'prestige' is worth the rest. Anyway I like my Sub C date and would pay the 7K again. And for sure it is better bang per buck than that Tiffany engagement ring that i bought no doubt about that!

Don't worry what others think. It is your watch, it should make you happy. $1,000 to some is like $1,000,000 to others. If they recognize Rolex and you are worried they will recognize one of the best, then I guess you have arrived.

I find it rather interesting that you are walking around asking random people what they think a Rolex cost...they likely find it odd as well.

My wife's brother thinks I'm a show-off because he thinks my Platona was over a thousand dollars! No one cares but the owner.

You could wear the Rolex hangtag with the price attached to your watch, I suppose.

But I could not possibly care less if my Rolex is noticed. I prefer it not be, actually. So what does it matter what someone else thinks?

Sometimes I wear a 75k watch with paint splattered work pants and a tattered sweatshirt when we go car hunting or mall shopping. My point is I wear the watch cause I like it. If I was trying to make a statement I would enhance the rest of my wardrobe when I wear the expensive stuff.

So you wear a watch so that others see how much money you have? Obviously money and class do not go hand in hand.

I couldn't care less what people think.

I'm happy to share the joy of watches with others, but on the whole when I do, I just get blank stares.

There's some pleasure to be had in esoterica.
