Billions and no Rolex

Been binge watching the Showtime series Billions and have seen quite a few high end watches (IWC, Pateks etc) but no Rolex... Just wondering if I'm missing something (only 4 eps in) or are Rolex watches just stepping stones for millionaires on their way to that other comma???

Well, as your watching Showtime shows, check out "The Affair" for the random Rolex appearance. I had fun checking them out while we're shooting. Cheers

Latter. IMHO, Rolex is luxury but not ultra luxury. When you are talking about having FU money, you are talking about ultra luxury.

+1...for the sake of comparison, Rolex is the timepiece equivalent of a BMW or Mercedes. A Patek-Philippe/Audemars-Piguet/Vasheron Constantin is the timepiece equivalent of a Rolls Royce, Aston-Martin or a Bentley.

the irony is that the higher one goes up the material or success-related food chain, the less recognizable exclusive timepieces & automobiles become to the general public/masses...a good thing in many ways.

Although I guess I may be accused of lying, I grew up in NY and met - through social functions with my parents, or through meeting my friends' parents - many hedge fund managers. If you live in a good co-op and go to a good private school, plenty of your friends will be children of hedge funders. Plus some neighbors in our building were billionaires or close - mostly from running a private equity or hedge fund operation.

I'm not claiming to be super close with them (I'm only 25 years old and moved to Asia for now) but I've met the managers of about 10 of the 20 biggest funds in NYC/CT. Either at a party my parents took me to, at a charity event, or because they're a friend's parent.

Have not watched this TV show but I do remember some of these hedge fund dads (in real life) wore your basic DJ or maybe a DD.

Therefore, I don't believe there's a certain level of wealth at which people stop being interested in Rolex. Being a billionaire means having options - that could mean no watch, casio digital, PP sky moon tourbillon, a sporty RM, or a SS Rolex. Whatever the individual feels like doing. Some may see Rolex as a stepping stone, but others stick with the brand regardless of how much their wealth grows

And Steelo was not wearing anything special in the early seasons but now has a DD2. And look at Chumlee on Pawn Stars, must be making crazy money now.

Yeah I could have sworn there is a broker thats wearing a deep sea and Axe is wearing a Radiomir in episode 1 and Cartier Roadster I believe since so not Ultra Luxury imho.... And btw i have a few friends with FU money all of them are Rolex customers... Im in South Beach right now and earlier was having dinner at a friends restaurant as a guy walks in wearing a Rose Gold AP Royal Oak. Right after he walks out I over hear the table behind me saying the guy is a deadbeat and on the verge of bankruptcy. I'm wearing my 216570 all quiet and humble. : } Now granted its not my only watch but its not always the watch nor the clothes. And honestly I think thats what they are trying to show with Axe. The guy wears t shirt and jeans to meetings... To me FU money means you do what you want when you want and no ones opinion sways you. Lol the wealthiest guy I know wears a 15 year old Longines.

It's only a tv show portraying Wall Street. People with FU money could care less what others think of their attire. Many don't even bother to wear a nice watch, since they can invest that money and make it grow.

Just because someone is smart with or skilled at earning money, does not mean they are well informed, interested, or passionate about fine timepieces.
At the same time, we all have different tastes and preferences.

Exactly!

Also, movie and tv props are usually just that.

During an episode of 'Shark Tank', Billionaire Mark Cuban stated that guys in his position don't NEED a watch...

Whether he was referring to his wealth or his personality type is up to the imagination...

I would assume that when you attain that level of wealth, everything around you works on your time.

That being said, I don't associate the word billionaire with Rolex. That is not in any way a knock against rolex.

He was referring to the fact that when someone is as wealthy/powerful as him, people operate around his schedule so he doesn't need to tell the time.

I used to associate people wearing Rolex with wealth but I don't anymore. For starters I own Rolexes and I've seen discussions on this forum with people saving up for a Rolex or putting it on credit. Not everyone is passionate about watches in fact most people aren't. Man I know that have money to burn tend to splurge on cars and women on clothes, handbags and jewelries. Besides most wealthy people are wealthy because they don't spend tens of thousands of dollars on watches

Watch the guy that goes to the shrink in Ep 1 or 2. It's the part where she asks: 'What did you take home last year?' He wears a sub for sure.

I have been told that the wealthier the individual, the less likely you'll be able to tell.
A pilot friend told me once that the nicest passengers in his private jet business are those with FU money: they just don't care, show up in flip-flops, mind their own business.
The worst passengers are those who have a corporate card, lots of bling, big mouth, expensive suit, act important, etc. etc.

I like the show and there have been a couple of Rolexes on the show. I was trying to figure out what Axe was wearing in the last episode we watched when he went to the Metallica concert. White dialed Chrono but never did nail it down. Pretty sure he was wearing a Panerai in the first episode.
Most of the really wealthy people I know are not into watches. A very wealthy friend has been wearing a two tone Date Just he received for graduation from college back in the 80's. I bet he has worn that watch everyday since 1989.
