Without a great movement you can't have a great watch; but a great watch is always more than the movement. So, to some extent, every watch lover needs some respect for the movement. You don't need to understand it, but you do need to grasp how vital a role it plays.
An imprecise watch is a poor watch.

I do not understand the poll.

I place value in movements over cases and metals. I prefer in house movements and try to learn about them.

This. My view is if metal rather than movement is more important to you, go buy an iWatch.

I should feel ashamed by saying that it's been 5-6 years I've been on the forum but don't know the minuscule details of the movements. I know the reference numbers of a few and what stands out. That's about it. But I have much respect for Rolex movements

I'm more interested in the movements I can see and that are more complex and decorated, some of the Langes and FPJs I've seen are truly breathtaking. For Rolex my principal concern is accuracy and reliability.

movement matters but not the be all and end all as casing, dial, craftmanship, bracelet etc all matter.

the 'manufacture' movements Rolex and Omega produce for example are great but so are the chronometer grade ETA's used by other luxury brands....

when you get to the NEXT level AP PP VC you get the best of both worlds...movement and casing etc

I wonder, do you? I would suspect that the Rolex movements are more rugged, more reliable and probably a bit more accurate. Granted, they don't have all the decorating, if that is what you value..

I'd guess that the new 3255 movement is better , at long-term timekeeping, than anything from the companies you mention. Of course, where these manufacturers do win is in exclusivity. No argument about that. For me, Rolex make better watches, in real world terms of usability, reliability and precision. Just not as exclusive. Or as beautiful.

Most guys now probably couldn't tell you how the basics of how the engine in the car they drive every day works, there's so little interest in mechanical things, let alone a mechanical watch's movement. The day isn't far off where grown men will have to first watch a YouTube video demonstrating how to operate a shovel if their wife asks them to dig a hole to plant a shrub.

Rolex knows this. The main thrust of their marketing is more about lifestyle, cases, and convincing everyone what they're selling is "luxury". Movement junkies know Rolex movements are reliable and accurate enough, but nothing to get excited about compared to other offerings.

But I would not consider myself a movement person. Not even close by TRF standards anyway.
