5 digit wearers... do you feel the need to upgrade?

There are three Rolex watches in my household, all five digit references.

My wife and I are very pleased with our watches and ceratinly have no "need" to upgrade as having the "newest/latest" is not an issue for us (Although I do have "glidelock envy" when it gets humid or chilly outside) but I sometimes feel like maybe I should.

Question is how many are flipping "fives" for "sixes" solely because they are the "newest/latest"?

OP, you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the clasp. IMHO one can choose between 5 and 6 digit references when talking about ceramic bezels etc (each to their own, I have both)...but to me there is nothing to be discussed when it comes to the bracelet and clasp.....the solid link bracelet is far, far superior (be it glidelock or easylink).

Great question. I added a SD4K to my collection of a Sub LV and 16200 Datejust.

The newer model has some nice improvements but by no way feels superior to my 16610LV.

It's different, not better.

I like the flat finish of the older aluminum bezels more.

I like the clasp on the newer models more.

I like the solid bracelets of the new models more, however I prefer the tapered lugs of the older models.

Definitely pros and cons to each. The SD4K has a nice mix of both IMO with a flat dial and tapered lugs.

All that being said, I wouldn't get a newer model just to 'upgrade'. Only if those newer features have value to you over your current pieces.

I like the 'finish' of the ceramics but usually not the colour.
Love the new bracelets.
Not keen on new sizes and chunky shapes.
You can't have everything it seems so on balance I will stay with the fives.

I start off with the 6 digits and eventually to the 5 digits...the two references are just different. That's about it...different.

What I like about the 6 digits are the improvements technically (clasps and solid links) and cosmetically (ceramic inserts) while on the 5 digits, the tool watch feeling where form follows function.

Both have a place in one's collections or rotations...

X2 The 16750 (which I still have) was my constant companion until a 1675 was shown to me. It went on the wrist and over a year later it is still there.

I have a 5 digit Sub and a 6 digit Datejust. I wouldn't swap either one for the other generation. 6 digit sport watches are too chunky whereas 5 digit dress watches are too slim to me.

For DJs I can handle both; btw do you mean 36mm or 41mm DJs? Sub and GMTs for me are five digit watches sue to the case sizes.

Was there a 5-digit DJII? I was speaking of the DJ36 and my preference for its 6-digit version. I've never liked the DJII for the lack of a Jubilee. I won't consider the DJ41, either, until it is offered in SS/WG.

buy a new one, the upgrades are fantastic BUT keep your existing ones as they are great and starting to go up in value!

I have both, even though I said I'd never buy a six digit Sub Date. Until I tried it on. All the things I hated about the six digits were amplified in the macro photos. On the wrist I don't see the engraved rehaute, and it looks a bit boxier than the five digit, but not much to my eye. I'm in agreement with Ryuden, they're just different. When it comes down to it, they use the same movement.

I am a bigger guy, and I have bigger wrists. My 16610 looks perfectly fine on me, but I recently tried on a 16613 and literally fell in love. It's just so blocky and masculine. It feels more modern, more substantial, more everything. I fully see myself "upgrading" at some point. That's how I feel today, ask me in a week, and my answer may be different.

Nice Swiss watches are nothing like iphones. In my mind there is really no need to "upgrade". Two of my other watches are now discontinued, and I like them both better than their replacements. ... So no upgrading for me...

I technically have a six-digit Submariner, but I believe it falls into the five digit category with its hollow bracelet, aluminum bezel and 9188xxx serial. I would never flip it or sell it, but I definitely would like to someday get one of the newer ones with SEL, upgraded clasp and chunkier design. For me, one wouldn't necessarily replace the other, I just like some of the changes they have made.

*that being said, hopefully my next one is a YM2
