My local AD called me about a Daytona asking if I'd want one. The answer was again, no. I told her my next watch was going to be 18k as I have SS with Milly, TT with Bluesy, and just need 18k for the trifecta. However, I told her this was going to be a purchase no sooner than a year from now the way it's looking.

She then informs me that she has a client with some serious mojo who's bought over 30 Rolexes from her alone, and he has his eye on a home somewhere far away from here and is selling off some of his collection to either purchase the home or put a down payment on it or something. Anyway, the watch has supposedly never even been worn and he just got it because it was somewhat rare. For a quick sale he'd do it for $16,500. I've looked on the net and I haven't seen any this cheap even pre-owned and claiming to be 95%.

I'm caught here because I don't want to part with the money right now, but to me it sounds like a good deal. I'm tempted to lowball the guy just to see if he'll go lower, but I also don't want to offend a fellow WIS. Need some help here. BTW, this is an identical pic of the watch in question in case anyone's wondering exactly what i'm talking about here...

My favorite reseller in Dallas won't go lower than 20k on a USED one. So I would jump on it!

Sounds like a good price, but I don't know that I would buy it or any watch necessarily as an investment, unless I really loved the watch as well e.g. a military sub for me would be one of the rare few that fills these duel attributes.

All as I can say is the price sounds very good.

Yeah, I should clarify that I don't buy watches as an investment other than the fact that I like the idea of being able to get at least a majority of my money back later and enjoying them in the meantime. It would be worn, and kept for a very long time if I did this.

I think that 16,500 is a great price. With the price of gold only going up, your sure to get a good 90% of your money back if you ever decide to sell it.

My advice is go for it.What have you got lose, the sale is being arranged through an AD.
Many collectors never take their watches out of the packaging!!!!!!!

My thought on this is if this guy is as solid a customer with your AD as they told you, won't they offer this piece to others to help this guy out? My point being, make a counter but I would caution you to A) do it quickly and B) make it reasonable.

I think it's a smoking deal and would move on it quickly even if I had to pay the guy's asking price.

Well she told me about him a few months back. I'm sure she's made a deal to get some kind of cut on each watch (which i'm more than fine with) since she's in contact with high end buyers everyday, and he's obviously been good to her. I asked about a President originally, and she asked for me but he said no Day-Dates were going to leave the collection, but he'd sell a never worn GMTII-c 18k for $20k and it obviously listed for more than this.

Fast forward to today when I again told her I was interested in 18k and was really waiting for a DDII since the case was bigger and I wanted something 40mm. I then lamented that I would probably have to wait a long time to get that kind of money up and even then I'd probably get one second hand, so we're talking about a ways down the road. She said "Let me check on that GMT Anniversary for you again. He's pretty motivated". When she called me back she said he'd do the $16,500, and that was only because she told him I'd bought 2 Millies (he has as well) and he knew I'd value something out of the ordinary and take care of it.

It would seem that the seller is already taking a big $$ loss and also paying the broker. I don't expect that anyone could ask for much more of a discount. If you don't buy it someone else will eventually or he may just keep it and save the aggravation. I would guess that if he has the means to buy 30 Rolex watches from one sales person he probably is able to do the deal for that house somehow. I'd hate to think the sale/no sale of a single watch from his vast collection was a deal breaker on a house.
I hope that you're able to get him even lower but to me that already sounds like a deal.

If you've already got your mind set on this watch and most likely will have to spend a lot more $$ to buy the same one in 1 yr, I'd take the deal. It's not a chance that you'll get more than once or twice in your life time.

BTW, I like to have a White Dial Daytona, for real.

It sounds like you have the funds to pull this off, but weren't planning on spending that kind of coin at the moment and want some affirmation from your TRF friends that this is the right decision that your gut is telling you to go with. I'm guessing we'll be getting some photos soon?

I would snap it up at that price, it is a bargain, cheapest here in the Uk I have seen brand new is £10,450. It is a fantastic gold model to go for.

Y'all are probably going to create voodoo dolls and stab me with them, but I passed for the time being. The AD called me today and I told her it was just the wrong time. She said she wasn't really pushing the sale of the watch to anyone else so he'd more than likely still have it if I changed my mind. And yeah, I have the funds. I could take him the cash right now, but I've got a tenth anniversary with my wife coming up and it might be a bit selfish of me to get a Milly, and then a month later plunk down this much dough on another Rollie even though she doesn't mind if I get it. Hell, I'm only 27. There'll be another deal somewhere along the way. Thanks for the advice everyone

Snap it up if you like the watch, but don't just buy it because it's a gold watch. Personally I prefer the 18k with the black dial, but there you go.
