A bad time to get an Explorer I 39mm?

I really don't mind the current model, but if I get one used now will the price drop later? Will this version be harder to sell down the road?

Usually I say no to these sentiments but in this case....I much prefer the upgrades. I think many do.

Edit: I guess I left out the important bit. If you can get a really good deal on the current one then swing away. Resale only matters if you sell!

Per Hodinkee it's not released until fall, yet we have a member who has one already. Not sure when the new one will hit NYC.

I too have seen it in person. I just picked up the pre-'16 model. Got a great deal on it.

No - I don't think it's a bad time to buy pre-owned. The new one with longer hand will not cause 99.5% of future pre-owned buyers to pay less for those made in 2015

The older model does seem to be a really good deal right now. Most people seem to prefer the revised version, but they are really similar. Grab one!

I think the old one is more versatile with the white gold 3/6/9. Buy the one you like best.

This is a less popular SS model. So I'd think any price changes on the older one will be only a few hundred. It's not like we're talking about buying a platona at list and then selling it in a year. I doubt you'll see the shorty explorer in good condition here go for under $3000. If that happens, then I'm buying.

There shouldn't be any issues with selling it, it is a Rolex. But again worst case scenario you may not get as much as you hoped for.

It usually come down to buying right. Personally I never understood the big deal about the shorter hands and lack of lume.

Personally I would buy the older (current) 214270 model. If Rolex is in fact allowing owners to swap out hands as suggested in another thread. I don't know much about retaining value, resale and collectibility of these new models but I do know what I like. I was never bothered by the hands on the current explorer but like the idea of having the option of changing them out but I don't like the lume on the numerals. So for me I'd buy now. I don't feel these are small changes; I think you should really examine the differences and get the one you like without letting a few $100 either way influence your decision.

I did not want to spoil the 'incoming' thread, but the hands of the 2016 Explorer are indeed way too fat and long to my taste. They look dangly and bloated at the same time.

I am extremely happy with my 'old' Explorer, short hands and all. No plan to sell it, ever. And if for any reason I have to sell, will 500 more or less make a difference?

This is a WIS dilemma. Most secondary market buyers don't know the difference between the 2 models. I have the old 39 and the minute hand has never bothered me. But if you like the new design be patient and wait for it.

If you're asking this question it's probably because you already have doubts about the current model. Why pay all that money and not be 100% confident it's what you want in the end.

I think the risk with the T.rex current 39mm model losing value is a real one

There are a fair number of people who think the longer hands are much better on the new 39mm

Forget about later....The version with the leftover hands are harder to sell now.

They're sitting in the windows of all the ADs and 2nd hand shops while people wait on lists for the new ones to come in so they can buy 'em.

Now, if you buy the short handed version 2nd hand right now & sell it soon then you'll not take a hit, but buy one used now and then try to sell it in a year or two when the newer one is also available out there on the used market and I think you'll have a harder time selling and/or you'll take a haircut.

My personal opinion is that you'd be better served waiting for the upgraded model, instead of trying to outguess the future of the secondary market.

If I didn't have a 114270 (the quintessential Explorer, in my opinon), I'd definitely wait for the new 214270, if I were in the market for an Explorer.

I agree. If you are having to even question... why not just wait? It won't be nearly as long of a wait compared to the Daytona C.
