ADVICE NEEDED: Beat Up Rolex BUT Well Priced
Hi guys...
Wanted to pick the brains of more qualified and experienced members of this forum. So I've been browsing locally for a Rolex GMT Master ii 116710LN. I've found an individual seller and went to see the watch. It's in pretty scratched up state for a 5 year old watch. The guy has a box that's beat up also but it comes with the paperwork. No warranty on the watch. Guy is young and said he wore his Rolex all the time and was told scratches 'add' to the value lol, he seriously believed that I think... Anyway, Its scratched both on PCL and the brushed part. There is also a scratch on the crystal that's subtle. A lot of gunk/dirt on the bracelet also which I suspect is sweat etc... yuck! Now I've checked with the local RSC and seller is happy to take the watch there to be verified it's legit. I've also got quotes for polishing which are around $136 and crystal replacement (tho im thinking of delaying this to service in 2 years time) around $326. Now the interesting thing is this guy is desperate to sell to fund another watch. Now I've given the guy my price which is around $5000 mark. Factoring in the 'repairs' - I wanted to know what the forum thought + any other things I should be concerned about?! My intention is buy to use... then possibly in the future sell it off. Here's a pic of the current condition. |

I would rather spend 1000 to 1200 dollars more and get one in better shape under warranty.

I wouldn't buy beat up watches or anything for that matter. Move on to the next one or spend another grand and get a good shape watch.

Very good condition would pull 5800 (from what I have experienced). If everything checks out, I personally would be a player at 4800 ish after you factor in the glass replacement. I would however get it serviced at that time as well, only because you would get the RSC polish and warranty.

So you're basically going to be in for $5500 (20000 dirhams) which doesn't sound too bad if it has box and papers. I'd go with the cash and try for a little lower.

True... think the comment on getting it serviced is important to rule out any issues. Factoring that in and its increasing cost by 4000 dirhams plus. the guy originally wanted 26000 for it

As long as there are no deep gouges in case or bracelet and due to crystal scratch 4500-4800 would seem about right as it is due a service soon as well.

Appreciate the advice. Factoring all this in its pushing the price up to 17500 my offer + 5000 + 500 Rolex verification to 23000 - I've seen better condition GMT's in UAE for sale on the used market for around same price.

This watch does not look beat up imho. Only a minor scratch on the crystal and some scuffs on the bracelet is not a big issue imho. Easy DIY fix

Doesn't look bad to me either. Get the price down a bit and give it a good bath.
If you're really bothered by the "gunk" then you can pick up a cheap ultrasonic cleaner for next to nothing and give the bracelet the full-on spa treatment. As above, save the polish and crystal replacement until it goes into RSC. |

If you travel to the Uk Emkwan from Abu Dhabi you can get tax back. My parents live in Dubai so I use there card to get tax back when I buy my watches in Dublin. Got a brand new sub date for 22,000 dirhams.

I'd get the price a bit down like, ok not a bit but at least 500 or more to make this doable. Needs a complete service in my opinion.

I don't like marks on the crystal, usually means the owner didn't care about the watch at all, I've had that before and that always jarred with me, so I'd pass and save all the hassle.

The pricing isn't far off, but for me I'd prefer to save a little more and get something in better shape, potentially still under warranty. |

Indeed. I wouldn't care too much about PCL scratches etc, but a scratched crystal? How did that happen?

Seems like a lot of work and time away from a new purchase to save a little money. You can find a good example that is not in this rough condition. I would pass and go find a better example. It will also save you a lot of personal time.

My rule for buying used items (expensive cars, expensive watches) is to assume that two (2) repairs will be needed and to adjust my offering price accordingly. If no repairs are need, my cost was a good price. If they are both needed, then my total cost was a fair price with no regrets.
As as I got older (and I had less time/interest for "the hunt" and "small to medium" amounts of money mattered less), I simply asked myself "will XXXX dollars matter to me next year? Will I even remember?" For this GMT, the cost (purchase plus RSC service) is too close to the going price for nice GMTs. I would look for a nice GMT with proof of service and not bother with this watch. |
