Patek 5960P vs. 5170G

Hey all,

I've been close to moving on a 5170G Black dial. But I was just offered a mint 5960P with the grey dial. I know the 5960 series is not the purist choice and the movement can't compare to the 5170 but I find it eminently wearable and a wonderful combination of sportiness and class. What do you say - pass on the 5170G Black (which is a pretty dressy watch) and go for the 5960?

It's all about the movement for me.

Yea, I hear that. I didn't care for the 5905 much as I found the dial too cluttered and squished and the case too large. But the 5960 with the contrasting sub-dial is very sweet. But no comparison with the movement - it's adequate but crunchy!

Yeah, but not like the Japanese number one rated horse at Royal Ascot who tanked.

I think a 3 legged horse wit Breguet numerals will still take this!

Out of these two, the black 5170 for me. But a 5960P with black dial would be my clear favorite here.

For looks and styling it's really no contest, the case shape is much more appealing on the 5170, and the dial is much more appealing. The 5980 is a great everyday watch to wear.....

Of these two, it would be 5170 for me. It's a better chrono and the black dial is incredible. I also love the new 5170r that came out. Make sure you get a nice discount on the watch though.

5170 all day!

Manual movement, black dial, Breguet numerals, leaf hands... What do you want more?

However I would directly change the strap from shiny black to matt black as this would make the watch more casual and versatile.

Tough call. I own a 5960p with grey dial...although most will say this is the least desirable dial configuration of the three p versions, I would disagree. Rarity/supply aside, I like the Combo due to its versatility, the way the white sub dial really pops From the anthracite background, and the readability. I also got it because I didn't have a calendar complication and wanted to add one to the collection. From a value perspective, in platinum, with an annual calendar, chrono, power reserve, and day/night indicator, I think it checks a lot of boxes relative to the price.

As for the 5170g with black dial, though I don't own one, I hope to maybe pick one up someday. The movement speaks for itself, it's amazing, and it's considerably lighter and thinner. Much more dressy, though I'm sure it can be worn casually as well. I think readability is a little weaker, but it's so nice looking I really don't care.

I guess what I am saying is I am a huge fan of both. I think it comes down to what you already have in your collection. The other consideration that I've been taking into account is the possibility of a 5170p next year. In my dreams it would have a blue sector dial, but that's getting off topic...

Thanks for your thoughts. Though I wouldn't hold out for a sector dial platinum 5170. Blue maybe, though I don't know how it'll look with breuget numerals.

I've been wearing the 5960 for a few hours and it feels nice on the wrist. Though I don't love the lumed hands. I found the 5170G to be very dressy. Shiny. And almost too serious. There's a certain lightness to the design of the 5960 that is attractive to me.

I peso ally love the 5960 and had it been a bit larger (im 6'4" - prefer a 42mm size ) - this would be a great piece. The contrast in the dial, the round pushers- love em.

To me, the 5170 is too "safe"- very symmetrical, very boring. Just my personal opinion.

Get the 5960

X2. Agree on the "safe" part. Love the contrasting dials of the 5960

Yup, the contrasting dial makes the watch. I had the platinum black dial on my wrist and I missed the color.

5170 is much more attractive to my eye. So it really depends on which one plucks your strings.

Hope that @martinr won't mind for posting his pic but for me this 5905 is the best (less cluttered dial IMHO).

Black or blue yes would be my choice, never liked much the grey, even before I knew they were falling down on resale

Nice but I definitely prefer the blue dial on this one, any watch which comes in blue dial usually has my preference, but sure much more beautiful than the 5960...

5905 is great but you have to like a thick heavy watch and its 42mm so bigger than the 5960. I wouldn't decide either way until you see the 5170 in RG.

The 5905 was just too large for me. And heavy.
I prefer the 5170 in WG as the strong white markers look better with the WG case. If I was going RG I'd go with cream dial.

Ok then between the two choices 5960P vs 5170G I'd go with the 5170.
