New or used

After searching and searching I have to ask this question, is it better to buy a new Rolex or used. I am very interested in the Sea Dweller or the Deep Sea Dweller because of it's size, i can't make up my mind if I should buy the newest used watch in the best condition or should I wait and buy a new one. Looking forward to your opinions.

Depends on your financial situation. If you are well off, buy new. If you are pinching pennies, buy the best used model you can afford from a trusted seller.

^ I think it also has to do with your volume, what you are buying etc.

If you are going to flip watches, buy used. If you are buying SS buy used. If you are buying PM, buy used mint, in terms of Rolex. (It's all brand dependant)

If you are buying super high end, I buy new.

Definitely used unless you are wealthy. Let someone else take the depreciation. Buy with a credit card from a seller with a brick & mortar store.

I actually would have thought the opposite. Buy steel Rolexes new cause they hold the value the best. Buy PM Rolexes used cause they depreciate substantially. I don't know what you mean by super high end, but I would imagine that they depreciate the most?

You could buy the "used" watch that you've always wanted, or settle for what ever "new" watch that you can afford.

I don't think it's a rich or poor comment. There is depreciation in everything. Being wealthy doesn't mean you pissed money away to get there.

That being said, if you can allow someone else to take the hit, I think that's wise.

At some point though, the difference doesn't matter, and that's a personal decision.

If you are wealthy you still buy used because it is the smart thing to do with your money, someone else ate the depreciation and if you buy mint used or you can even find used with stickers still on them many times and you save thousands. Once you wear either of them, they are basically worth the same, so why spend the extra money? I just bought a used watch, saved $2000 over retail unworn with all the protective stickers still on it. Watch was just about a year old. If you bought the same watch new and wore it a few times it would be worth the same as my year old one - so why would you flush 2 grand?? What is the old adage, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Depends on how wealthy I guess. It's all relative. If you were truly smart with your money, you probably wouldn't spend the money on these frivolous trinkets. So, tell me again about the old adage...

They don't depreciate the most or more. But let's just use 20% as an example.

If a Rolex depreciates 20% on model A that costs 25k

And an RM depreciates 20% on model B that costs 135k

They are very different numbers.

I was actually under the impression that on a percentage basis, the PM ones depreciated more. To your point, if on an absolute basis the differences could be substantial.

Buy new in the stickers from a trusted seller. Price difference with worn watch in good condition is marginal. Much prefer to peel them off and make my own scratches

As you can see, opinion is varied.

One isn't "better" than the other; it's an option to consider when you see the watch you want.

It's personal preference if you want new stuff or somebody else's cast-aways..

I bought new and wanted a new one. I wanted my name on the card. Plus I never plan to sell it. I got it because I always wanted a Rolex since I was a young boy. I also happened to get a 15% discount from my AD. I will for sure own more in the future and will probably buy a few used and new.

Buy used from a TRUSTED seller. Takes of the initial depreciation hit while still ensuring that you won't have to sweat the transaction.

For me, it depends on how much I will be wearing the watch. If one is going wear the watch more than once a week, it's going to look like a used one in short order. I'm just getting started and have bought 2 new and 1 used. You can save up to a couple of grand buying used. I could not find any marks on the used one I bought from a trusted seller until I pulled out a magnifying glass and there was still 56 months left on the 60 month factory warranty. Sometimes the spread between "new" and "used mint" is only a few hundred dollars, when that's the case, I buy new regardless of how much I'm going to wear the watch. I'm not pinching pennies, but why spend more for new if it doesn't make sense? I always try the get the best possible price on everything I buy, from real estate to exotic cars, and I shop really hard. Good luck and have fun!
