The DEEPSEA in Tokyo

It was a very hot and humid day in Tokyo; but I am glad I decided to venture outside because I saw the new DEEPSEA.

I guess I'll have to revise my opinion of the DEEPSEA. I saw it; I wore it; I liked it. I was ready to hate it; but I was stunned by how much I liked the watch.

In my opinion, the "Original Gas Escape Valve" (etc.) writing blends in well. In photos, it stands out; but on my arm, to my eye, the writing was just a subtle (yes, subtle) part of the watch. In fact, I kind of liked it.

I could spend a lot of time describing it poorly, but instead here are my barely adequate photos.

The DEEPSEA in the shop window has the plastic bezel protector on.

In three photos, you can see it side by side with my GMT IIC. In two of those photos, I think you can see that from a distance, the writing is not much more "in your face" than the "Rolex, Rolex, Rolex" on my GMT II. Or, at least that's the way I saw it.

The AD (the only one I know of) told me the DEEPSEA was released in Japan on 1 August, but they had a long "reservation list." I tried on the display model (the real thing); but he wouldn't sell it. I understood he had sold a few already to those on the list; but Hatcho_Bori reported on another forum that stores in Tokyo have DEEPSEAs, but only display models. Maybe I misunderstood the AD. Anyway, he said they would get more "next year."

The AD also said he didn't have a release date yet for the Day-Date II. I told him I was not impressed with the photos of the DD II; that I preferred the 36 mm model. He said he thought the same until he saw the real thing in Switzerland and that it is very nice; a new model; a totally new look, he said. (I still think 36 mm is just right for the DD.)

Here are the photos from today.

And my trusty GMT IIC on my way home on the train.

Interestingly. the first thing I noticed was that it didn't feel much heavier than my GMT IIC. It felt comfortable on my arm; very solid; though it wasn't sized for me. The crystal is very nice with the domed effect.

WOW! What a great post. Really liked your description of wearing in-person and the visual effect of the writing on the face of the watch. Your pictures are really good, and your post is a good reminder that trying a Rollie on is the only way to see if it "smiles" at you. I really like the pictures of the new clasp ... impressive stuff.

Thanks Otto, great information there and good pictures. Just for reference would you mind telling us what your wrist size is? And how loose / tight was the bracelet when you were wearing it? TIA.

The bracelet was loose; not sized for me. I have a 7 inch wrist.

Whoa! Many thanks for sharing the photos!
Are these the first known working DSSD wrist shots?

Otto,

Great report and photos. Thanks for sharing - the watch is beautiful. I hope it is not too big for my wrists!

Great pics ...

I am definitely obsessed with size of a watch ... the bigger, the better for me .... I would be the first one to buy the DEEP SEA .... but the more I look at the DEEPSEA, the more ridiculous it appears .... looks off balance .... it looks like a big case on a the same standard chain size .... had they made the chain or bracelet wider, it would have looked nice .....

People were right on this board who said there is nothing like the SEA DWELLER ... simple elegant and balanced ... this DEEPSEA looks more like a rush to produce something to meet a deadline or beat the competition....it just doesn't have the flow and symmetry of the SD ....on the deepsea, the casing is too big and thick for the bracelet ....looks like a blob of steel sitting on a chain ....

It is not impressing me ...BUT Awesome pics ... thanks!!

The bracelet is wider. It may still be a bit out of proportion but the bracelet is very cool. It may also be thicker but the big thing is the clasp. I don't know about you guys but this bracelet is very impressive to me. I am really anxious to see one. If I don't get a Deepsea I am definitely getting the next new Submariner in Stainless if it has this same bracelet design.

Of course, I like the Sea-Dweller, but, if you've only seen the DEEPSEA in photos so far, I really think you need to see the DEEPSEA in person to see the overall effect produced by the design. I was surprised. With the way the crystal sits flush in the case, and the effect the dome produces on the dial, the watch looks pretty sleek for such a big monster. I imagined a clunky monster; but what I tried on was a very solid and attractive watch with a lot going for it. I truly expected to hate it, but it won me over in an instant. Maybe I'm just easy to please! Others might not like it; some may hate it; but it is definitely a watch that makes a statement.

Thanks for sharing.

That looks superb. I'm a little unsure about the thickness of it though.

Sorry for all the questions but here are a couple more......

Sorry for all the questions but here are a couple more.

It appears that the dial (not the crystal) is about the same size as the GMTIIC in the pics. it also looks like the hands and hour markers are the same. Do you think this is the case?

I would agree Vince, in fact if anything I'd say the dial looks bigger on the GMT, must be due to the writing on the DSSD

Thanks for the pic's Otto. but once again the watch looks too big for the bracelet. The best thing I see on that watch is the clasp(buckle) and I hope it trickles down to the other sport models.

Concur. A 7 inch wrist not huge, but to me it still looks top heavy and out of balance with the bracelet.

Bracelet's ratchet clasp feature already on the new Sub.

Of course, size, overkill depth rating, goofy dial text means nothing, these will sell like hot cakes and temporarily inflate in value on the GM. Good "flip" meat, just don't hold it too long.
