Can you get a discount from London Rolex AD?
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and hope any Londoners out there will be able to give me some advice. I had my lady's 26mm datejust stolen a couple of weeks ago and I have been given a letter by the insurance company to use in either Watches of Switzerland, Goldsmiths or Mappin & Webb. I am allowed to spend £5750 but would like to spend an extra £900 to buy the 31mm rose gold, jubilee datejust with a white dial and fluted bezel. I just wanted to know if it is possible to negotiate a discount for the Rolex I would like at any of the shops listed above? Huge thanks for any replies! |

Hello and welcome! The level of discount is usually based on how available a particular piece is. So unless what you're after is a hard to find piece, I doubt you'll have any trouble negotiating a discount.

Welcome! Not sure about the London market specifically, but in the US a slower moving PM ladies piece would definitely be something on which you could negotiate a discount.

Similar thread in the Open Discussion Forum with a couple of useful responses:
http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=487482 In short, on a reference like what you're after, you should be able to achieve 5 to 10% discount off. Not sure if the insurance paying the first £5,750 will alter the AD's mindset. Don't be afraid to pick up the phone to other branches of those dealers outside of your neck of the woods. Don't ask, don't get. Good luck

Not sure, Mappin & Webb used to discount, but are now a sister company of Watches of Switzerland that is they're both owned by the same company. Last time I asked (last summer) at W O S (on a YM Blue and a DeepSea Blue) no dice. Hope this helps :)

My AD at Cardiff offered me 5% on a YM blue but a supervisor there is a very long-standing personal friend and I was a very good customer at her previous jeweller. Much depends on relationship with the AD as well as the particular reference

Just hadn't decided which one to buy and glad I waited until I could see my local AD due to issues with the 40mm DD.

Ive had one of these insurance voucher things for GBP 10k, i got an iwc and a rolex and the woman only gave about 50 quid discount in total. If they know you have to spend the money with them and they won't discount. i would try and negotiate a price and then pay with the voucher without telling them initially. may be able to get about 10% off the list if you are lucky but with a rumoured price rinse on the cards they may be unwilling to play ball

On that up to 10% is possible, just go to as many ADs as you can.

IMHO, best way for YOU to find is to PHONE the ADs directly and ask.

You won't get a discount on top of using a voucher, the insurance company takes a large cut

I agree with one of the other posters, if you don't initally mention the insurance voucher you might have a bit more success pushing the price down, and then once a price is settled on you casually pay with the voucher and add any extra funds required. At that stage, when paying, if they kick up a fuss then you can simply point out that HOW its being paid for shouldn't affect the price they were willing to offer you. They're getting their money after all. I wanted to ask you if your watch was insured through a specialist insurer or just added to a home contents policy? In the UK what are people finding is the best way to insure their watch(es) and which is the most reliable at when it comes to paying out? |

Thanks for all the replies.
I've rung round loads of ADs in the 3 companies from Scotland to South of England and none will give a discount on the watch due to the imminent price rise. Apparently the world and his wife are coming to the UK to buy Rolexes as the £ exchange rate is in their favour. But some will give me a discount off my first service. I'm just steeling myself to ask for this discount in one of the shops. Bargaining is so not the British thing On the insurance point I insured my watch and my husband's Breitling as named items under our home contents insurance with Axa. Although it was stolen in Brussels, I didn't have it insured under my travel insurance as if I had to make a claim they would tell me to claim under my house contents ins. Keep your fingers crossed I build up enough courage to get my watch this weekend! Thanks Last edited by bigblueballoon; 5 August 2016 at 08:27 PM.. Reason: Did the quote wrong |

Also, when you claimed did your provider not try to wiggle out of honouring it? Did they not say it shouldve been on your wrist at all times or anything like that? |

I called 4-5 AD's in London when enquiring about the BLNR and neither places like Goldsmiths or Watches Of Switzerland will offer discount on any Rolex Sports Watch. You also can't get interest free finance deals on them anymore so by all means ask but it will get knocked back.

It is my understanding that on SS Sports models you've got no chance but on PM watches then there's some room to play.

The stores and sales people in those stores want to build a relationship with their customers. That being said, DJs - depending on specs - are easier for them to find than SS sport models. They usually offer 5-10% off. I recently purchased one with a friend at WoS in regeant street. It was two weeks after the Brexit so there was an influx of customers from abroad, coming in to purchase watches (including my friend). Knowing he came to the UK just to do some shopping, he was only given a 3% discount. But he did get his VAT back.
So what I'm trying to say, make sure to let them think you'll be a long time customer. Insurance was worth it? |

Thanks to everyone for their advice.
I finally plucked up courage to go into M&W this morning and buy my watch. I went with the "if you don't ask you don't get " attitude, and although I didn't get a discount on the watch I did get £200 off my first service. As my husband says "something is better than nothing!!" So, I finally have my beautiful 31mm rose gold, jubilee strap, white faced, roman numeraled lady's date just!! So, here's a pic (hopefully): I love it ! |
