Why did you choose Sea-Dweller over Sub?
I'm probably going to get a Sub-Date tomorrow, but I'm somewhat fascinated by the Sea-Dweller. I think a lot of that fascination stems from its discontinued status. Why did YOU choose the SD over the Sub?
I know a lot of people don't like the cyclops on the Sub-- I actually like the cyclops, but the Dweller just seems a little more unique. I tried it on in the store (I have a small wrist, so I couldn't REALLY try it on without removing links, which wasn't going to happen), and its downward curving lugs seem to hug the top of my wrist better than the Sub's. It's thickness does seem to give a little more presence, but I've heard that it can be uncomfortable due to the greater thickness. I'm still going to get the Sub, but just wanted to hear some of your reasoning on SD over Sub. thanks |

I was in a similar position about a year ago, deliberating between the Subdate and the SD.. eventually I went with the SD simply because of its cleaner look without the cyclops and it being a tad less common than the Subdate... IMO, it has everything the Subdate has but a little more "exclusive" in that it is not the most recognizable sports Rolex as the former. fast forward a year later, I'm glad I made the SD my choice as it has been a great and reliable timekeepr for me thus far..

Because Sub only more iconic than SD? And some people don't need that iconic thing?

I loved SD because of its thickness giving it a beefier look
Also due to the increased thickness of the bezel, the coin edges looks really sharp on a SD!! Also its small looking dial give it a really balanced look

It's simply a different watch. I see the SD as an alter ego, and a Sub to be a bit more realistic. I will never need the escape valve yet I love it, go figure. Now a Sub is a watch that kinda grabs your attention but they usually stay low pro due to to their wider yet lower stance. The SD on the other hand(imagine me wearing a SUB on my left and a SD on the other) sits high and tends to make the wearer constantly readjust it due to shifting. For some odd reason the SD gets the attention it wants by being one fussy SOB! Still, I opted for the SOB and soon I will get me a SUB to compliment each other.

If you do a search you will find extensive posts regarding this subject. I owned the SD which is a fab watch in everyway. I have now settled on a 16610. I find it a little more comfortable to wear everyday. I simply like the fact that if your a one Rolex owner, then the 16610 represented everything about Rolex. But in fact, so does the SD. Try them on, and see which one grabs you. Having owned both, the 16610 is my keeper, heck I've not flipped in over a month now

In a way, I wish I got the SD. I like the sub, but could do w/o the ugly cyclops.

I had both for a while and just sold the Sub to a TRF member. I prefer the SD because it is a bit more unique, never saw another one in the wild, looks bit more pronounced on my wrist, just feels more substantial.

I had a Sub Date and a Sub No-Date. I wanted the date, but not the bubble.
Also, I like the chunkiness. |

Because it came up at the right price!
The criterion for all my watch buying. I would just as soon bought a Sub but have to make do with a Tudor version. |

To me it's the opposite...I choose the subdate over the SD because of the cyclop.

Well I'll go any of them to dinner or on the beach, but if I'm welding rig support's at 180 feet under water, I'm for sure going to wear the s\d. And if i was going to wear a white suit and a bow tie aka a'l 007 style, why not the sub!

Well said, I've got the blue face and that really helps, but I've got to admit tphan i'm a coward when it comes to sticking blue/sub watch in salt water, that's why I've got s/d just for work and the b/sub for pleasure!

I have 3 Subs and a SD, so I chose both. As it turns out, I like the Subs better (more comfortable on my wrist).

Nothing like a watch ( s/d) that also act's as a steel rope cutter (spining bezel ) a'la 007, man i wish it came with that feature ! And a weight training dumbell, your right as much as I like the s/d the sub is always smoother on the wrist!

For me it was mainly the cyclops I really just dont like it for some reason and also to be a bit different as a couple of mates have got the sub tt and sub date.
The only one I really want now is the rose gold daytona but really at 35k its a bit much for me to justify so might just settle for the ss daytona. |

why ?? don't know and totally regretting it. I've got stucked in the " production end " thing and totally bought the damn thing. Now don't get me wrong,it's a beautiful watch, even if too thick and heavy for my taste, but it is too much of a classic and I'm really not into vintage stuff. I'm currently selling it to make fund for a more comfy and funny LV.
I know some day I will regret this, but I just want a watch that makes me smile like the LV does, and one that fit flat on my wrist and stays there instead of bending back and forth because of how heavy it is.... I will miss my SD,I know, and having it stored away instead of wearing is incredibly frustrating. I know right now I should keep it and wait to get some value on it,but I don't care. I don't buy watches for investment,I buy them to use and enjoy them |

I chose the SD because the Sub is very popular here in NY and that's what you see often around here. Also, the SD is a little bigger than the Sub.

I prefer the Sub to the SD
I prefer the Sub to the SD. The first Rolex I bought was the SD because I did not care for the date magnifier, that was in 1984. I sold that SD and have owned three Subs and one other SD since then. I sold the second SD last summer and still have a Sub LV and another standard Sub. I don't really think that they wear that differently but the Sub LV is what really sold me on the Sub and I decided that I really did not like having the Helium Relief Valve.

Excuse me if I horn in on this conversation, but why, outside of diving, would one want or not want a helium escape valve?

I chose the SD (just over a month ago) for 4 reasons:
1. History-it's a classic watch. But so are the sub date and non-date. 2. Uniqueness-in my neck of the woods, most people don't even know this watch exists. And it's no longer made. 3. Subtlety-Without the cyclops, people don't instantly know it's a $6K rolex you've got on your wrist, which to me is a good thing. 4. Comfort-Maybe it's just my wrist, but if you get the bracelet sized correctly, I think this is an incredibly comfortable watch. Doesn't shift at all on my wrist. Also, the curved lugs make it sit up a bit off the wrist, which allows for plenty of circulation between the watch and the wrist, increasing the wearing comfort. I'll probaly buy another Rolex at some point in the future. Just don't know I'll ever buy a better Rolex.
