I'm going to try the 5712 on Saturday and can buyit if I like it
The dealer said they have had a 5990 in today and I can have that if I want
I'm new to the 5990. Is it a nice piece to own and will it hold value ?

It's a nice watch in pictures but over sized in reality.the bezel is almost unnecessarily large and the thickness put me off it .
The 5712 is much closer to the original and has a complications that can be used everyday.Its also thin and muck more elegant than the 5990.

How do you use moonphase everyday? Maybe referring to PR?

Well you look at the MP everyday and the PR is useful as well, I had a few chronos and apart from timing eggs or pasta no use, also had a GMT, useful if you travel a lot, I didn't find it very useful to be honest

I love the reference 5712, I had the 1a and now I have the R. As far as the 5990 for me its strenght in its the size and weight, the dial the turn off.

I think the 5990 is amazing and would get that instead of the 5712. It is thicker than the 5712, but I wouldn't let that put you off. The bezel is slimmer (from inside edge to outside edge) than the 5712, which allows the dial to be bigger.

I personally think the 5990 has more useful complications. If you wear the 5712 every day there is no need for the power reserve indicator as it will always be wound, and if you only wear it occasionally it will need winding when you pick it up.

I thought it was amazing too. Much better in person than in pictures. I know you tried on a lot of models recently and that the 5370 was your favorite. Since you have the 5980, if you had the choice at the time between 5980 and 5990, what would you get?

I would have got the 5990. The 5990 only has a 1 hour chrono, but I find the chrono of the 5980 hard to read. The 5990 is clearer and more intuitive. I also prefer that the dial of the 5990 is slightly larger, as well as a few other minor reasons.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was not aware 5980 chrono was a bit hard to read.

Curious what makes you think this way? Is it due to lack of premium it commands as the 11 and 12 did?

No I just constantly chasing shiny new things. Really loved the 5990--much more presence than 5711 or 5712 which I like.

The 5712 and the 5990 are quite different watches and sit differently on the wrist. It is almost like comparing the 5711 and the 5980.

When considering a watch based on future re-sale value, no one knows what the supply/demand ratio for a specific watch will be in 5 or 10 years. Having said that the production numbers for the 5990 is probably smaller than the 5712. But because of the higher price point, there are fewer potential customers for the 5990 compared to a 5712 if you decide to resell the watch.

At the end of the day, it is always best to get the watch you will enjoy wearing, rather than worrying if you will lose money if you decide to sell it in a few years. IMO that takes the joy out of watch ownership and lead to worries about market fluctuation.

I like the 5990 chrono, one hour is enough and it's easy to read, unlike the 5980. They're hard to find in a the USA and you won't get much of a discount, the price seems to hold at least as well as the ubiquitous 5712. Travel time complication is more useful than the moonphase unless you're a biodynamic farmer. I've sold all my Nautilus but would get the 5990 if I got another one.

I personally find chronograph & gmt complications far more useful than the state of the moon or how much longer my watch can sit off my wrist.

Also 120 m of water resistance (5990) gives me a lot more piece of mind than 60 m (5712).

But the movement's prettier on the 5712 with its micro rotor & unencumbered view.

I own both the 5712 and 5990 and if i only could chose 1-- 5990. Much more useful. I like a PR indicator but the moon phase takes time to set (not a daily wearer of one watch). I travel a fair bit so the 5990 is easy to set the second time zone. It is a little larger on the wrist but much smaller than most chronos and even with my small 6.4 inch wrist-- fits really well

I would just go for 5990 because you may soon find youself in a situation looking for 5990 after getting the 5712/1A. This model sells well despite many criticise its price and busy dial. Value will hold imho. Wish you get your piece soon!

I wasn't a fan of the 5990 until I saw it in person. Looks better than the 5980, IMO. I would pick the 5712 due to the slim case and the blue dial. I think Patek makes the best looking blue dial.

This echoes my thoughts. Picked mine up nearly a year ago and love it :)

I travel quite a lot as well, and between this and my BLNR I'm covered from a traveling base (but definitely still some GMT's/world timers I want!) Changing time zones on the 5990 is even easier than the 116710.

It wears very comfortably, easy to read and rarely do I need more than a 60min timer. Good water resistance, and very easy to dress up and down.

5712 is most likely more liquid, as the 5990 is pretty expensive for a steel watch.

I didn't like it at first but it grew on me. The only naut ss I need is a 5990. Useful travel time complication. Love the heft too. Hard to get now in our country with wait list. Sells above retail in Us grey dealers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

5712a definitely, a Nautilus looks great with a blue dial.
