Rolex Care - What NOT to do?

Hello All,

I have been the owner of a GMT Master for many years. I recently just purchased a DD Rose Gold 41 MM (more info on my other thread, I will post photos later once I figure it out.)

I have always pretty much done everything with the GMT - swimming in the pool, ocean swimming, even doing mild scuba diving with it. Never had a problem. I did, however, once speak with a guy who told me that despite the fact that these are coined as scuba watches, do NOT swim with them. But I still do and dont have any problems and never have.

With my new Rose Gold watch, what advice can I have of what NOT to do? Will the ocean ruin it?

the watch itself will be fine; i'd worry more about the gold. i'd say given the value of the watch; maybe leave it behind and travel with the GMT.

there are no "DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE WATCH" stickers so you're good

It probably wouldn't hurt it, but why risk it? I don't want to sound like a jerk, but do you NEED to wear it in/to the ocean? It's yours and you can do whatever you want, but I'm of the school of thought that mitigates risk. Strap on the GMT or something better suited for that environment and pop on the DD when you dry off for evening cocktails

Watches are meant to be used, and Rolexes are built like thanks. Do everything with it... That's why and how it is truly your companion.

The DD to me is the perfect watch for just about anything. I know people who rarely take them off and all the dings, dents, scratches, etc. have added to great patina after years of ownership.

Why not gold is highly resistant to corrosion. Wear it everywhere! Salt water won't hurt it

1) You will find perfectly intact gold coins that have survived in the bottom of the ocean for over a thousand years. 2) Less than 0.0001% of the world's population have ever been anywhere near 50 meters under water. Your watch will be perfectly safe diving under 100 meters below the surface of the ocean. 3) After swimming in the ocean simply rinse your watch with a little water from the tap and it will outlive you many times over. 4) Moreover, you can use it for shooting, swimming, diving, fishing, playing golf, tennis, baseball (unless you are a pitcher and you wear your watch on your throwing hand), you can have wild sex, jump up and down, jog, do cartwheels, drive race cars, fly planes, dig ditches, hammer nails, saw wood or any other material, sign checks, spy, pilot race boats, sail, race horses, take your German Shepard for a walk or your greyhound to a race, climb mountains, visit archeological sites, jump from a plane (with a parachute), skate, ski on grass, mud or snow, go to church, start a revolution, help an old lady across the street, even visit in-laws. 5) If you can't enjoy a Rolex being a Rolex, then stick to Timex... or Casio.

PS- Yes, you can also put out fires with your gold Rolex.

I've been in the ocean with SS, TT & PM for the last 30+ years. The only one to have an adverse reaction -------, the SS Sea dweller 4000. There was a part of the alloy that apparently wasn't "mixed" well (rolex's words...) and part of the bracelet rusted. Rolex promptly made it right. Go figure...

I have always been true to the Rolex brand because they are a watch that you can wear all the time. Like you I wear mine for everything: swimming, hiking, skiing etc. etc. and never had an issue. I had an uncle that worked in the oil business who used to through his DJ in a vat of degreaser at the end of the day to get the grime off and some how even it survived! As long as it is within its service interval meaning the seals are all intact and its been pressure tested and you screw the crown in and rinse it after it comes out of salt water, you should be golden ... sorry couldn't resist :-)

Life is all about choices. I would choose not to wear a DD in the ocean, but you can, and it will be fine...

No, the ocean won't ruin it. But, it would be the other dangers in the sea like banging it on a rock or piece of corral that would steer me away from this path.

You better not wear it on land either, then. You could bang it on a doorway or someone else's watch as they walk past you on a busy sidewalk!

The ocean or pool will not hurt a gold watch. Just rinse it and/or clean well when done. Please don't put it into the dishwasher to clean it! This idea is ridiculous. A little Dawn, soft toothbrush and warm water will suffice. Dry with a soft hand towel. Enjoy, then repeat.

My 25 year old SD spent 3 years on a riverboat. She got wet working under the boat and was submerged in diesel & oil more than a few times in the engine room bilges. Poor watch didn't know what clear ocean water was for years.
It's even been in a fight before. I heard she left a nasty mark.
For all my Oysters, a trip into the shower with me has been their daily care. Now, anytime they have been in saltwater or chems, a freshwater bath follows. Other than that, no special care.
