I felt like a butthead...

Went to Cigar City Brewery in Tampa the other night. Heard I missed meeting Derek Carr from the Raiders by about 30 minutes. Mighta had a few too many beers. On a trip back from the loo, while wearing a Sub no date, I noticed a dude sitting at another table with what sure looked like a stainless Sub date. So, like a friendly drunk, I went and tried to strike up a convo about watches.

Turns out, Invicta makes a Sub clone to fool drunk people.

I wasn't trying to be a pretentious d***, but that's what we both ended up thinking about me.

Lesson learned. I doubt I'll attempt to compliment or engage in conversation about watches.

At least not drunk.

"Nice watch" is a good starter. The response will tell you whether he wants to talk about his watch. If not, keep walking.

Can't argue your logic, Abdullah. Complimented a patient on a Speedmaster at work Friday night. It was neat to hear how his company gifted it to him after 20 years of service. We talked watches, then I poked him with a needle. Sober. :-)

I would stabbed the needle in him and said there was a tablet for this, but we reserve that for the Rolex wearers.

I almost made that same mistake and I was sober. So don't be to hard on your self, I would have sworn he had a tt sub on. But closer examination I could see the second hand and new it was an invicta. But I don't think you can ever go wrong just saying nice watch.

A couple weeks ago I was coming back from Florida vacation with speedy I had on the trip. (Side note: gotta love wind up for when you are on vacation and don't wear watch during day because you are at pool or beach. No winder worries. Wind it up and watch always wound)

Anyway I was standing at my gate boarding the aircraft with my pass in hand and the guy in front of me kept staring at my hesalite speedy. He was wearing a sub. His looks were either:

A) that's only a lowly omega and I have a Rolex
Or
B) nice speedy dude.

I could not tell which way his thoughts were leaning by his expression and he almost seemed to say something and so did I but in end I thought just leave it or one of us might put a foot in mouth.

I concluded he thought he was king sh@t. That was my best guess.
A)

(Side note: there's nothing preventing you from winding an automatic watch as well, on the occasions when your'e not wearing it for day and haven't taken a winder.)

LOL. Glad someone else said something. I didn't understand that comment at all either.

When I see someone wearing a nice watch, I compliment them.

Sometimes the watch is a "$10 Walmart Special" and the person tells me so.

I say something to the effect that it doesn't matter. It's a nice-looking watch, anyway.

I think that it's a wonderful time when you can buy so many great-looking watches for so little, besides the fact that they perform so well.

Some of my favorite watches cost less than $200 and some a lot less.

A couple of my colleagues complimented me on my Pelagos. I just said thanks and that I collect them as a hobby and that was it. I've seen a few Rolexes out in the wild but have yet to engage in any conversation.

I will say "nice watch" if the situation looks friendly but when you're drunk everyone seems friendly and you think you're Brad Pitt.

Off topic from watches... I freakin' love Cigar City. Getting ready to pop a Raspberry Halo Imperial Stout right now. Only two more minutes to go until noon!

Starting watch conversions is weird, do women walk around saying "nice" diamond

It's one reason I sold most of my Rolex's and wear an Omega most days, I prefer to be left alone and live in anonymity without some wack job yelling "nice Rolex dude" when I'm out eating (it's happened)

From my experience yes women compliment other women's jewelry all the time particularly engagement rings.

Anyways, nice watch is all I will say and it's a rare occurrence. Maybe once a year when the circumstances are appropriate (i.e. Others won't hear, it's a social situation etc)

The one time I tried that, it was me who ended up the idiot.

A few years ago I saw a guy with what was obviously a Rolex, the oyster bracelet gave it away. I got a brief glance at it and saw a cyclops and a GMT hand, so I said "Nice GMT." The guy looked at it, then at me, and said "Thanks! It's actually an Explorer II."

I looked again, and indeed it was a black dial 16570. I laughed at myself, how could I miss the obviously steel bezel? Me - a supposed Rolex lover! I still laugh when I think about that little exchange. What a jackass I am.

I don't know enough about watches to comment, but I always notice them (often I have no idea what they are!)

I also think women constantly compliment each other on shoe/bag/jewellery

I gave up on other peoples watches as well, most people think we're nuts anyway, no need to confirm it by drooling over some guy's watch on the plane. :)
