FS: Omega Constellation "Pie Pan" dial, Ref. 168.005 (circa 1964) FULL SET
Brand / Model / Vintage: Omega Constellation Reference 168.005 production date: 1964
Movement: Omega in-house caliber 561 automatic movement, 24 jewels, date chronometer. The 55x/56x/75x family of Omega calibers are widely considered to be the finest mass-produced movements in the history of watchmaking. The movement serial number 21,xx,xxx dates it to 1964, and the sale date of 1965 is perfectly consistent. Case: Original stainless steel case shows signs of light wear commensurate with age. Edges remain very sharp. The iconic "dog leg" or "grasshopper lug" steel case measures a classic 34mm wide (excluding crown) and 42mm long. 18mm lug width. The distinctive Observatory logo on the back is well defined. Dial / Crystal / Handset / Crown: The Pie Pan dial is one of the most recognizable, mid-century watch designs. There are only a few areas of discoloration in the lacquer finish but this is to be expected. All of the surface features (white gold hour markers, Tritium luminous dots, applied Omega symbol and star and framed date window) are all intact. The crystal is original (Omega logo at center) and shows small cracks and some chipping around the periphery. The beautiful white metal Dauphine hands are original and show only very light blemishes. The crown is a replacement, likely installed many years ago. Bracelet: Original Omega five-row Beads of Rice bracelet, code 1502 "14" end pieces. Bracelet can accommodate a 7”+ wrist and comes with two additional links. Condition: Apart from the winding crown this watch is untouched and in 100% all-original condition. I recommend having the watch serviced upon purchase as it has been unused and stored away for decades. Other considerations include having the crystal replaced and sourcing a period correct Omega crown. Notes: This is one of those acquisitions that collectors really seek out: An essentially untouched, iconic vintage watch with full provenance. I've seen very few early 60's Omega Constellations with complete papers (Omega certificate, guarantee card and original owner documentation) and presentation box (beautiful red leather, inner tray, with full working hinges). In my opinion, the Universal Geneve Polerouter and the Omega “Pie Pan” Constellation are the two very best vintage/1960s timepieces one can buy for under under $2,000...and it's interesting to note that both watches were designed by the great Gerald Genta.
