Ever listened to your watches ticking?

Most posts are visual and I admit, this is a geeky observation but I think an interesting one nonetheless. I accidentally started comparing the ticking sound of the watches in my collection and discovered that each watch of the same model ticked with the same sound. Is this possibly a good way of verifying authenticity?

I'm not an expert horologist but I wonder if watch movements have a signature pattern which a timograph could be used to compare.

I wonder how many of you having read this will be placing your watches against your ear listening to their movements

I own a Panerai 005, comparing it to my submariner and tag carrera.

Its the loudest ticking sound i heard on a watch, putting it on your bedside table you can even hear the slightest ticking sound.

On my first day owning it I thought something is wrong. I researched the internet and found out that it's normal.

I have listened to the ticking sound of my watches before. I find the ticking on the Submariner is less audible than the GMT because of the thicker case back.

When I got my first GMT (after SD, DSSD) and had it at a certain angle the ticking was so loud. Fantastic. When going to sleep woulld try to get my arm at such an angle as to maximise the sound toward my ear.

Did this a lot with my Speedy Pro and tried it recently with my GMT. Was pleasantly surprised to find they each had their own distinct "voice".

I wear mine at night (if I wake up I have an OCD thing about checking the time), and if I slip my hand under my pillow, I can hear the ticking ... Pretty mesmerizing. My Seamaster 300 is the loudest one I have - even on my valet stand across the room I can hear it loud and clear.

Sorry I'm raising an old post and using the wrong site, but my Omega 300m is really loud and I can't find any explanation why.

This is not a complaint, I love to hear the ticking, just curious why it's so loud on this watch. Maybe because its a big watch?

Not Geeky at all in fact I find it quite interesting I always have listened to mechanical watches since I've been into watches dating back to my childhood I've noticed that Rolex watches make an especially unique pinging type tick Which is a beautiful sound...cool thread

Listen quite often ............. the Milgauss makes a "whirring" sound with a slight tick. The sub ticks more distinctly, and the MOTM clearly ticks.

Being in the US Army, my ears aren't that good.

I just hear a constant ring tone.

From years of riding motorcycles and hunting I also have the perpetual ringing in the ears

One of the luxuries I enjoy is listening to my Rolex.

While I like the sound Rolex makes, I find the high beat sound of my Zenith El Primero frenetic yet controlled - at the same time. If that makes any sense!

BTW- on a semi-related wacky note...I used to be in the Merchant Marines. I had a shipmate who worked in the engine room. He had recordings from engine rooms of ships he had sailed on previously. He knew all the ships names by the sound of each recording...he used them to fall asleep!

I hadn't really noticed the ticking until recently. I was at a hotel in Brisbane and had placed my 16570 on the bedside table. The table did a great job at amplifying the tick. I spent a minute or so trying to track down what the noise was. The pinging sound was very loud and distinctive, very different to my new Seiko Samurai.

The Rolex tick seems very musical, and I would imagine another one of the many clues for determining authenticity.

For the drummers out there trying placing your Rolex on some skins!

I love listening to my automatic watches. It's amazing to hear how much is going on behind the scenes just to move some hands and tell the time. The minds which create the movements must be incredible to own

I hear it with my 114300. I wonder if the 904L steel causes the sound. I don't remember it with my old U serial 16234.
