Sub 168000 Question
Im still in search for my first rolex. Wanted something vintage and rare so I am considering a 168000. But the closest I could come to it so far is a 16610 dated 1989. Can someone pls tell me the difference bet the 2. How come the price is higher on the 168000 when both have manufacturing dates which are not far apart?
Question to vintage collectors also: Since this 16610 is one of the earlier versions of it,would you like it better than the later versions? Thanks and Best Regards! |

The 168000 represented the move from 316 steel to 904L. Visually there's no difference between it and early 16610s.
The 3135 movement used in the 16610 was not quite ready to debut so the 168000 carried the older 3035 as used in the 16800. As to an early version of the 16610 (tritium dial, lug holes) opposed to the newer luminova dial and sans lug hole case--as a collector and given equal condition I'll go trit. However is always a question of functionality with the advantage to the latter because of lume. |

Excellent answer Mike and agree, and will add there are quite a few 16800 with the added 0 stamped on case to make out they are genuine 168000.

Several vintage collectors I know feel that this watch is not a legitimate part of the "vintage" era as most 168000's have the sapphire crystal and WG surrounds. However there are pieces out there with matte dials, they are just tough to find and even more difficult to prove authenticity. Personally, I think the reference should be part of any vintage Sub collection, but you may be better suited to pick up a matte dialed 16800 for just a few dollars more.

The only question that remains to be answered is: Why the higher price for the 168000?
The reason is rarity. The 168000 was made for only 9 months. According to Antiquorum (watch auction house), it's classified as "Very Rare." |

And thats correct thats why quite a few 16800 have been stamped with the extra 0 to make them look like 168000

I guess the only thing left to do is show a picture of a 168000...
