About to do something most people would probably call crazy!
So a while back I bought a 2002 (my sons birth year) No-Date Sub 14060M and absolutely loved it. Not having a date was a bummer but something about the pre-ceramic 2 liner no date just screams to me. No engraving, ticks to the 15, aluminum bezel. Simplicity at it's best. Definition of a perfect tool watch. It just tells time lol. Plus I always thought it would be a cool little hand me down to my son years from now. He'd have a Rolex of his birth year. My dad gave me his his DRSD and it's around my birth year and that's kind of awesome. And it's got that classic/vintage style all over it. Some call it plain and boring but I think it's stunning.
Fast forward a few months of watch obsession and I flipped it for a NOS (new old stock 2015) Sea-Dweller 116600. It's a beast! And in my eyes the best! Amazingly engineered, built like a tank. Date without a cyclops, blue lume, matte dial with bigger markings, ceramic bezel, HEV, and rock solid glidelock clasp, down to 4000 feet (not that I would EVER really get past 60ish when I dive lol). I honestly think an amazing timepiece. One of the best engineered dive watches Rolex ever made But.... I'm starting to think it's a bit too busy. It's chunky and slightly uncomfortable. I'm always f'n with the glidelock throughout the day. It's top heavy on my tiny girly wrists. I always know it's there, which is good and bad. I'm trying to convince myself to keep because it's a beast and technically speaking a better watch than a Sub, but that no date is pulling me back, strong. I think I got caught up in the "collecting" and made a bigger deal about not having a date and that I have to have "the best" and not what was practical, comfortable. Think I bought a "grail watch" that might not have been "my" grail watch. So now I'm thinking of flipping it back for the no date sub. I'll take a big hit flipping it back. What's everyone's thoughts here? Have you bought a grail, regretted it and when reality set it you realized it might not be your grail and it's not living up to the hype? And before you say it, having both at this time is not an option lol

If you can afford both; do it, if you can't flip. You've probably lost more money in cars and those you have to fuel!

Most of us here have flipped once or twice. Some have done it multiple times with the same watch.
I can't tell you what to do, but I'm with Mike I wouldn't flip if its going tom be a loss. |

Give it more time maybe? I went from an Explorer I to the SD4K and at first it was a little uncomfortable. Now I don't even notice it and having the glidelock for adjustments is huge.

I'm always amazed how good the sd4k feels on the wrist without the divers extension, the balance is just perfect for s watch with that kind of height. I will agree though the 14060 is truly the essential Rolex diver in the modern models....simple, clean, functional, and so light/thin....especially the two liners. Maybe save a bit and add? That or hang on to the sd4k for a bit and let the market go for a bit so maybe a flip won't lose you as much with the discontinued model appreciating.

I went through literally the same thing! Sold my first rolex 16610 to get the DSSD. While I love the DSSD, that first watch was something special. I saved like a crazy person and bought my 16610 back. If I could not of saved at the time, personally, I would of sold the DSSD to get my 16610 back. That's just me!
One note, if you have the divers extension removed from the DSSD, it fits WAY better. |

I am not a good source. Love the Submariner (no date). Certainly taken losses before when my taste change. Rather eat it and have something I like. Only you can decide.

Just comes down to what you like and what works for you. If you think the 14060 would be it, then do it!
Personally I've never been a SD fan as the added depth rating isn't important to me and I never wanted the additional bulk. The old 5 digit Sub is a great watch and I love it but after having a 6 digit 114060 for a week now I don't think I would go back to the old 5 digit as my daily wear watch. I really like the new bracelet w/Glidelock (i don't mess with it now that I've found my setting, but like knowing it's there should I need it). I also really love the maxi dial and fatter minute hand...that is the part I really think I'd miss on an older model. I can appreciate both case styles...I like the older slimmer lugs better in pictures but actually on the wrist I love the new thicker case design. |

Haha! I suppose that's true. Though I am kind of long winded. Also a newbie at collecting and flipping and don't want to bite my nose off despite my face and looking for others who may have had an exp similar to this. Don't want to make another hasty decision.

![]() He does have a good point (as he usually does.) ![]() You will regret it, for sure. You can't sell something and lose money on it and later not regret the decision. But the alternative is to live with a watch that you are obviously not 100% in tune with, all because on paper and in some other folks mind, it is a better watch. Just do it. If you later find that you regret it so much that you need to go back, ![]()

I wouldn't say grails but I have flipped plenty of watches that I thought would be the cats pajamas. It's no big deal. Get what you want.

That fact you are even considering it means it's not your "grail". Kinda had this feeling with a planet ocean I once owned but never with any of the Rolex's (not yet anyway)

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the input.
I know this is prob silly to some folks and I've lurked many various forum threads just like this thinking "why would they ask, do what makes you happy, why do we care" hahaha. And here I am doing the same. Welcome to the other foot shoe. I think I Faz kind of hit the nail on the head. In my mind and on paper it's a "better watch" but The reality is I'm not 100% happy with it. Seriously, thanks again for the insight and input!!

I sort of did the same thing, I bought a 114060 first. I thought I really had to have the date, I ended up flipping it for a SubC Date. Then I tried on the LVc and after seeing it in person I knew I had to have it. So I sold the SubC Date for the LVc and added the BLNR. After having two watches with the date I realized it really wasn't necessary after all and I REALLY missed the clean symmetry of the 114060. So I ended up buying the 114060 again. In a few months I went from 0 Rolexes to 3 (and trying a DJ II in that time frame too lol.) After having the 3 I noticed myself pretty much only wearing my 114060 because it was my favorite. That said, the LVc is stunning and I couldn't let it go so I got rid of the BLNR because I didn't need the GMT function and it just didn't blow me away like I thought it would. TLDR: Yep, started off with the 114060 , sold it because I thought I needed a date, ended up flipping through a bunch of watches in a short period of time, and ended up with the 114060 anyways because it was perfect and I missed it. *Edit* Oh BTW I love your screen name, great book ![]() |

Almost exact same thing happened to me. Bought the SD unseen, wasn't impressed and was thicker and heavier than I had hoped for. Flipped for blnr and never looked back. That's why I tell people try it on before buying if possible..it's perfect on paper but it may not be for everyone.
