Why sell a Rolex?

I have a pre-owned Rolex and when I bought it I wondered who had owned it before me, where they had gone and what had they done while wearing it, and finally why they sold it. I bought it through a dealer not the previous owner. When I purchased the watch, I thought it would have been nice to have a write up of what the watch had been through prior to me owning it, but then I thought maybe it was being sold for a sad reason and that might bring me down. Anyway, why did or would you sell a Rolex or any watch? Have too many, upgrading, etc?

As mentioned above financial or as with me changes in taste, I sold my 16710 to a local dealer and always wonder where it ended up.

Ah, the lure of vintage reaches out to you. :)

Where has this old soldier been? Who owned it, what adventures has it been on in the last 50 years?

Any 'luxury' watch is 99.9% emotions - so for as many emotions as there are --- there are reasons to sell. Did not 'bond' to the watch, financial reasons, trade up or down, going down to '1 watch only' wear...etc and the list goes on

I've decided I'm keeping the ones I have even if I don't wear it anymore. I will eventually make a profit just because of inflation. If not in my lifetime, then in my daughter's lifetime.

I am still in the honeymoon phase with my Explorer so I can't imaging falling out of love with my watch, but has anyone ever one day realized they don't like their watch any more?

All material items have a unique story in and of themselves. If the previous owner was famous (or infamous) there might be some documentation but in most cases, these things just get passed on to a new owner along the way.

While a Rolex might be considered an heirloom (for those who have worthy and/or deserving descendants/recipients), they're just another commodity, no different than a car, house, jewelry or anything else that eventually changes hands over time. It's no big deal unless the current owner has a 'King Tut' complex (in which case the watch could conceivably be buried/interred alongside him as instrumentation for navigating one's existence in the afterlife).

People unload valuables everyday for countless reasons all and of their own. Chances are, you wouldn't want to know 'the full story' behind 90% of these items.

slightly off thread, back in 1920 the local town bum died, he was know by many begging on the streets being a drunk etc etc etc,,,, he was given a pauper's funeral, later on someone look into his real name, turns out he was a veteran from WW1 who as a single act of bravery went back out into no mans during heavy shelling to help men back from his unit, he was wounded twice and suffered from the effects mustard gas, he was awarded the Victory Cross VC..... after the war with no work to be found he fell into living on the streets and subsequently sold his medals to eat, as I'm a collector I hear similar stories about military watches inc Rolex 5517, just goes to show there always a story behind every item we hold..............
