Rolex Submariner vs. IWC Aquatimer vs. Tudor Pelagos

Hi All,

New member here. I'm looking to buy my first expensive timepiece after wearing cheaper designer watches for years. Although I know my cheaper Movados and Uniform Wares watches are mechanically inferior I really do enjoy the simple aesthetics. My new watch will not really be a part of a rotation, it will be a watch that I wear most of the time from work to out on the town.

While searching for new watches I found a few that stuck out: Tudor Pelagos, Rolex Submariner Date and the IWC Aquatimer Automatic. I can buy either the Pelagos or Aquatimer within the next month or so, but the Rolex will require a few more months of saving.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? Pull the trigger on a Pelagos or Aquatimer right away and risk spending even more on the Sub Date later down the road or just wait it out, save and get the Sub Date. If it counts for anything...if I had the money right now in my pocket I would purchase the Rolex (unfortunately saving for a wedding in Chicago costs a lot more than a couple Subs )

If you want the sub then just save. FYI the Pelagos is also an amazing, amazing piece. I would suggest trying both on.

I have both the sub and pelagos. I'd chose the sub every time. Pelagos is a great watch but sub is on another level.

I have got sub no date with ceramic bezel. While IWC and Tudor both produce very fine watches (I have also got 2 x IWCs), Sub is superior to the other 2 brands. You are comparing apples to oranges here. You should compare Sub with Blancpain, Omega, or similar brands in order to get better optic. Also, IMHO, Aquatimer is due for an update, so if you absolutely want Aquatimer, wait for the new model.

However, I would wait and get a sub. You will not regret it. It will last lifetime.

Keep saving for the Sub, without a doubt. It's simply on another level, not to mention significantly more versatile than the other two.

If what you truly want is a Submariner, then nothing else will scratch that itch and all roads will lead to a Sub eventually.

I say save up for it. It'll make it doubly satisfying once the day comes.

Go for the Sub. It's definitely the cleanest and most classic of those....and really of sport watches in general. I tried to be happy with something close (Tudor BB) and it didn't take. Tried twice and eventually ended up with a Sub and am much happier. Save yourself the expense and get the Sub the first time.

The sun without question. I was fortunate to be able to get one with a signing bonus 10 years ago and ten years later still my favorite. If it was good enough for 007 it's certainly good enough for us. It's the ultimate watch in my opinion. Can wear it to anything.

As a massive fan of the Pelagos and not really a fan of the Sub – I'd say only get the Pelagos if you see it as its own piece and not a Sub stand-in. If it's a matter of months to save, save and get what you really want. If that's the Sub, don't bother with the Pelagos.

I was in your shoes just a few weeks ago. But the Sub does nothing for me. It's an icon, I get this. But it's also the most copied design in the watch world and to me, the Pelagos is what the Sub used to be, a no non-sense dive watch. The new SubCs are now luxury watches. All shiny and bright with white gold, platinum dust and shiny ceramic bezel.

I wanted a tool watch and to me, the Pelagos was it. The new in-house movement with its 70h power reserve is just icing on the cake. If I want white gold markers and shiny I wear my Milgauss.

The Aquatimer is nice but never excited me to the point of pulling the trigger. But it's a watch I kept on my watch list for very long. It is a very nice watch in its own right, but the IWC bespoke bracelet/strap design makes it near impossible to get new straps and it is neither as luxurious as the Sub or as tool like as the Pelagos, in my opinion.

I will agree with the others, if it's a Sub you want, save. Nothing else will do. Buy the Pelagos because it is what you want, not because you can't afford what you want and pick it as a second best.

I bought a 3719 before a 16610 and it was great. I wore it for two years straight, but the sub was eating away at me. I've had the sub for over six years and wear it 99% of the time now.... wait for the sub imo

I plan on buying from someone on here that sells on the forums here. I'll be looking for a new watch with warranty and open name. Should save me some money, especially with IL state taxes.

All the watches you mentioned are great but it sounds like the Sub is in your mind the most so I would certainly recommend holding out for one.

If its your dream to have a nice watch then you will want to wait for the Sub, the others are great watches as well.

If you want a sub then get a sub because no mater what you get now you still want a sub. Someone told me Tutor Pelago are more popular in the UK where they can't get stainless steel sub, wonder how true is this

The pelagos is a great watch but as said make sure you really want it. I loved mine, but realised I wanted another Rolex and took a bit of a bath on it. Great watch though.

Sounds like you want the sub, and a few months is nothing. Just keep savings. If you're not sure which one you like better, maybe, but I think you'll always wish you had the sub.

I have a Subc and an Aquatimer, both are fantastic timepieces. To be honest, the Pelagius feels cheap compared to both of them imo.
