SD 4000 or Black Ceramic Daytona

AD has one new SD4000 left but I've been holding out for a black Daytona.

Hypothetically if you could choose either, and date function, cost, and PCL weren't issues, literally only looking at the case, daily functionality, and face, would you go with the SD4000 that was produced for 36 months or the black Daytona that is rarer now but in 10 years might be easier to find like the SS bezel versions.

I own the SD4k and it's a favorite. It's also not produced anymore. It gets my vote.

Seems like your question isn't based on which watch you prefer the look and feel of, but which one you think will perform best as an investment or holding its value?! Over the years I have passed on multiple Daytonas due to the fact that I prefer the looks of the Sub / SD's. That said, I really do like the white Daytona 500 and would definitely consider adding it to the mix.

There is no loser in your choices, so figure out which one sings to you...and buy at the best price you can...wear it and enjoy for years to come. Either one will do well...especially if you buy well.

For example, I purchased my SDC4K brand new from a trusted seller for about $8,500 2.5 years ago. It now gets well over $9k used...and will likely rise due to being discontinued. If you go the Daytona C route, be prepared to wait it out and try to buy at retail, cause you're not gonna get any lower discount on that watch! That said, you wld already have equity because it sells over retail all day long!

It's pretty personal.....because if we're talking about the black Daytona 116500, I'd pick the SD. But if it was white......much much harder choice for me if I could only have one.....this is only because I prefer the white on my dainty wrist and I think the black looks better on larger wrists etc. If you're speculating on which, my bet would be on the SD in the long run.....Daytona in the short game.

I would buy the SD 4k. You could always sell it if a Daytona C became available and you decided you'd rather have that.

Thanks Glidelock, I wasn't considering resale as much as how much am I going to regret leaving the SD4000, but you raise good points on the overall value perspective that I wasn't putting into the equation.

I'm leaning more towards the SD because I've always been a fan of divers and their functionality but can't tell if it was discontinued because it really isnt a good practical watch (ie top heavy, more expensive sub variant) or if I'm just caught up in the hype of the Daytona as it does appear to be a really nice comfortable watch with a chrono function 75% of users wont use including myself.

I know there are die hard fans of both, I'm trying to gain perspective on why either is preferrable. From what I see the Daytona is the Daytona, a watch that struggled for years, failed to get NASAs stamp of approval, and only recently put an in-house movement in the last 20 years. Whereas the SD has always been what it was, a tank that you can't sink or the cyclops-less date sports Rolex in less refined terms. But I can't lie, that Daytona black with black bezel is nice!

The SD4K was never a popular model back when you could of had it even with a discount. I doubt in years to come that will change just cause it's discontinued. At 40mm personally I'd go with a SubC Date (unless you hate the Cyclopes).

The SD4K really was a home run in my eyes, and likely even more so now that it's been discontinued. I own and love my DaytonaC (wear it every day), but if I were in your shoes I'd go with the SD4K now and wait for the call for the Daytona or find another way to acquire it in the near future. Since it was just released, the DaytonaC isn't going anywhere whereas the SD4K, especially in BNIB condition, will only get harder and harder to get.

Get the safe bet timeless Daytona.

Don't get distracted by the modern SD4K Ref 116600 because she ain't worth the trouble ! The Sea Dwellers you should be focusing on are the NeoVintage models

> the Old Sea Dweller Ref 16600
Mint or unused

> Triple Six 16660 transitional models of the mid 80s Cal 3035 with the Tritium hour markers, B+P preferably unused or in mint condition

Check out the Ref 16600 stats of R-L-X Sales Website between 2007-2009. The price of a Ref 16600 at the Grey Dealers when the watch was still in production was about €3950-4200. Would you like to know some shocking prices of a Ref 16600 today?

Then zero your rifle scope to Chrono24. Whad-Ya know! I'll be damned. There's actually a 2006 Z serial Ref 16600 FS that will be auctioned off soon with a starting bid price of €7000 !

Now on the same page, would you believe me if I told you there are also a bunch of V series "old SD" NOS insanely tagged at between €10 000--€12 000 ?

So it's the Old Sea Dweller before New not the other way around......

I'd definitely go with the 116500. I'm biased though because I like the 114060 better than the SD4000. :)

SD 4000 or Black Ceramic Daytona

Pickup the sd4k and wait for the Daytona. Both are awesome. Completely different watches but complementary to each other

I have both and did a short review of the Daytona but had some comparison points to my sd4k

I have a SD4K and love it, it's the perfect allrounder.

The black daytona C is a beautiful watch, but I prefer the 116520 so SD4K for me.

Have a look at my recent post - If I could only keep one..

Both hold their value very well at this point. Pick the one you prefer now and you could always reverse your decision if your taste changes down the road.

Tough decision...I have both and can't imagine given up either. Since the SD4K is no longer produced, I'd say get that now...then save up for the Daytona.

SDc is my favorite watch but if you're ignoring date and PCLs then I'd go with the Daytona.
