Nice conversation with another WIS today

I was picking up a package at UPS this afternoon and I noticed the clerk wearing a sub. I couldn't get a direct look at the dial but I was about 90% sure so I didn't say anything. I had my bluesy with me so I didn't want it to be awkward if it was a homage sub and I was wrong. I'm not used to seeing clerks with a Rolex at UPS. He eventually said he liked my sub so I returned the compliment. We ended up talking watches and cars for about an hour! He had just sold a vintage Omega Speedmaster and I mentioned my vintage Seamaster. He went to show me pics of the Omega and I saw he had a ton of pictures of Porsches on his iPad. Turns out he has a Porsche GT3 as well. Had a classic Porsche before that. Got the sub 20 years ago and it still looked new. Apparently he's been driving for UPS for almost 30 years. Said he saved for a year to buy his sub. I can identify with that! I can't say I've ever had a bad conversation with a fellow Rolex owner in the wild. It's a very rare occasion but always a good time!

This thread is funny cause I've never known a UPS driver whom owned a Porsche, but have seen many a UPS driver whom drive the UPS truck as if it were a Porsche!

Many well to do trust fund kids are forced to take on a day job in order to get those inheritance checks in the mail each month. To wealthy families, heirs having a stable day job beats being a day trader or uneducated investor risking their savings and heirloom in an instant.

From what it sounds like, the rising prices of vintage Porsches paid for his GT3. He had a late 70's car that he bought decades ago back when Porsches were reasonably priced and kept it. Apparently upgraded it over the years and sold it for 150k. I guess it was in a few magazines. I need to look the car up but he showed me pictures. Looked along the lines of a resto mod Singer. He mentioned he bought his Rolex on base so I'm assuming he was in the service 20 years ago in some capacity. Maybe National Guard or something. We didn't get too far into that. Too busy talking watches and cars His GT3 is a 996 model. Not the new car. I'm not sure what a 996 GT3 goes for but imagine not as much as the new car considering the 996 was water cooled. Now if it had been air cooled who knows what kind of Porsche frenzy there would be! lol

Lot of people in California have money but still work on "menial" jobs for various reasons. in La Jolla, as in Santa Barbara, I have seen homeless people on the street wearing Rolexes and talking on iPhones. Life in the slow lane.

A lot of people don't realize, but UPS drivers who worked at the company when it went public are millionaires. They made a fortune on company stock they were gifted, and many invested wisely after that. I'm not at all surprised by this guy

That may be the case but it sounds a bit odd that he had to save for a watch yet owns a GT3.

I'm such an old sceptic myself. Just comes from years of working in places
& seeing many liers come & go. The amount of stories I've heard over the years!

Had so many where I used to work. Bloke who "had an R33 GTR skyline" even had a picture of himself leaning on th spoiler. But I'd owned two GTR's myself and he had no detail to tell. His father came in to visit once and one of the other guys flat out asked him about the R33, bloke was as red a tomato!

Another bloke telling us about cars and bikes and thrashing an R1 about. Similar ending when his brother came in one day.

So many other stories.

He could have been a franchise owner of that location and may have multiple franchise locations. Funny story....I had an AC unit service scheduled at my home a few months back. After he was done, we got to talking about funny stories about how people don't take care of their AC units especially at rental properties. The guy had 21 rental properties and he was at my home servicing my AC.

ha!! My AC guy is exactly that. He owns 40 unit apartment complex with a few partners and several other rental properties. He told me not to spend money on buying Rolex and nice cars. Invest in real estate. I clearly did not listen....

But... How does a UPS guy afford a Rolex???

- Person who will insist he's a down to earth "regular guy" who doesn't judge others

It's (his previous driving job) a Teamster job that pays well and in recent years probably involved tons of OT. it's not like he has his own Lear Jet...just a decent watch and car.

UPS drivers with years in can make $30/hr with a ton of OT so easy $75K or more per year. If your debt and expenses are low at that salary a Porsche and Rolex is not so hard. He said he saved a year for the Sub.

Considering the gt3 starts around 140k you gotta be making a lot more than 75k/year to afford that car

$32-34/hr straight time. Plus a ton of OT and stock options. They work hard and they earn their pay

I have a friend that just got out of school with a mechanical engineering degree. He got on with UPS as an engineer and passed their management test. He almost makes as much as I do after 10 years of engineering in aerospace! They're doing well over there!

Management is a dangerous different story. I knew a guy who started loading trucks at UPS. He went to become a driver then management. He had a nice career and retirement until he passed away. Super nice guy too.

Let this be a lesson to us all to never judge by what someone does for a living...in most cases it is not how much money you make but how you choose to spend it. Very few make enough salary to live the complete wealthy lifestyle (multi-million dollar homes, high end cars, high end watches, Country Club and the Country Club set, 2nd and 3rd homes, very high end travel, clothes etc, etc) many that do live this lifestyle are often cash poor. Choosing a few passions ie. cars and watches and living the rest of your life humbly is how one builds net worth. Look at Warren Buffet still lives in his home from the 50's, drives humble cars, does own a older President I believe but likes to travel in a private jet.

I love having conversations with people who are passionate about their watches and cars vs those that have a Rolex because "everyone knows Rolex is expensive."

Just wondering, what's insane. Europe/Asia/Africa/Saint-Tropez/Bora Bora/...

One thing to keep in mind is GT3s are not actively depreciating. So if he bought it ok, and is not putting a ton of miles on it, he may very well drive it for near free...
