Mid age crisis..... what harm a couple of ss watches
Being middle aged and not wanting to fall into the usual cliches of fast sports cars or plantinum blondes, the former being too expensive & the latter too dangerous, I thought maybe I'd start a small watch collection. (Spoiler alert) As veterans here will surely surmise, this ends with a decent into TRF madness.
Anywhoo, why watches? Some years ago I read a book "longitude" which chronicled Watchmaker John Harrison's successful journey to design a clock to be utilized at sea overcoming problems of tempature, motion, humidity etc. His invention literally opened the new world for wide scale exploration & development. Other advances in the watching business also have played important roles in exploration and discovery. One example, the bygone US watch making industry allowed for the development and safe usage of the cross- continental railway system ( and gave the Swiss pause for concern). More recent examples are abundant on this forum from Jacque Cousteau & the comex divers revealing the depths of the seas to the assent of Mt Everest. So, yep. Cool stuff for a little mechanical devise. Then, the question became-- what watch; what brand? I fiddled around with some brands, but settled on rolex. They are certainly a part of the above history & do a superb job of capitalizing on it. Having settled on rolex, I needed to choose which one. Something iconic certainly. Also, I love water: pools, lakes, rivers or oceans, it matters not. Even a large mud puddle on a warm spring day is an almost irresistible temptation. So, submariner it is. Ceramic w/date. Then my collection took off: I've had almost every popular ss modern rolex at one time or another, mostly by flipping ( not good). Still, I discovered what I liked: stainless steel- who would ever get a tool watch in pm? Also pcl's are the worst! And glidelock is a gift from the gods( still believe that). Also, although I must stuff myself in a suit 3x a week & have done so for the past 30 yrs., Yet, I prefer to be discreet & low key. Just my outlook framed by youth. My kids counted up some 25 jobs I worked while making my way thru school. Most involved cleaning of some sort whether it be fish, yards, toilets, or meat room machinery. Thus, I wouldn't be caught dead with a fancy piece of jewelry. Well, it turns out that I have a magpie's proclivity for shiny things. The collection was onsolidated bringing in the BLRO and the SMURF( still hate that nickname). I'm happy..... on the other hand, maybe I should have bought the damn car! |

Thanks everyone!!! I had the hulk, sd43 & Deep-Blue. Unfortunately they were victims to the pm consolidation. Really miss the Deep blue. Proportions are off but man that dial is mesmerizing!
The Daytona is too much for my older eyes although my son has volunteered to wear it should I pick one up. |

Dayonta may make the list but I'm sure I can aspire to something even more insipid! Tell will tell. Of course between you & Megan the Daytona is already renting space in my brain |

If you bought a car you'd experience about the same immediate depreciation on it as you would if you purchased PMs at list from an AD. If you bought smartly then you won't experience much of a hit if you decide to sell these. Plus in general cars continue to devalue but Rolexes pretty much hit a minimum and they stay stationary or increase in value. So I'd say you likely have done much better than if you'd purchased as sporty car. Congratulations on a nice collection!!!

After reading that OP I was glad to read that you had come to your own conclusions about which watches you would buy via a logical progression of possible routes.
Congratulations!

Two additional points: first, I'm remiss in not thanking Oscar aka "body bump" for his help & wonderful service. Second, a real long shot :I'd love to put the BLRO on gluide lock. If anyone has any thoughts/ leads, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again for reading!

Thanks! JLC is my favorite non rolex watch. Like the sun moon combination both for its rarity and awareness of the vampire/ werewolf population.

Cape Cod is awesome. My blood pressure drops 10 points when I cross the bridge. I didn't swim as much on oceanside this year. Being outclassed by a thousand lbs is disconcerting. Also fisherman eaten by fish would be somewhat humiliating. Then again, I wouldn't be around to worry about it. Fins up!

Amazing collection in those 3 pieces. Sourcing a wg glidelock is going to be tricky and $$ (but yeah, a glidelock is worth th trouble). Good luck!

Great pieces! In the first picture the smurf looked really dark, I did not recognise it, real nice!
