New or used?
If you have the choice of a new or used watch which do you normally take? I am talking about watches currently in production, not vintage of course.
I prefer new, i just wait to get the price that works for me.

New or used?
I'm open to both but prefer to buy new from an AD. I've found especially recently that with a good relationship at an AD you can get very close if not better than trusted seller prices.

There are a lot of factors that play into what occurs with purchases but most is price driven.

New for a Rolex, whether from an AD or from a TS unworn and stickered depends on price and relationships. For some other brands I may go used if resale is known to tank.

Depends... for a 116610LV Hulk, I'll go to an AD provided I can get one, because there's little to no spread. Same with the 126600 new SD43. For the 116680 YMII, you'd save about 4K going with a trusted seller on TRF. So for me, it all depends on the watch and if I could save enough over buying from an AD.

Can I have two options? Price and condition are #1 obviously since you can get a lightly handled piece (basically bnib possibly minus squeak), but material also since you can avoid the massive depreciation on a precious metal piece.

New is my preference. My Explorer and Submariner were both purchased new at an AD.
My 16710 GMT Coke was purchased used, only because it was discontinued and no longer available at retail when I came around to acquiring one. Took about a year to find in the excellent and unpolished condition I required (thank you, DavidSW), but was able to buy while prices were still arguably reasonable. |

I don't mind lightly used new .. To explain I just got a Hulk that is only 90 days old for a way better price than if I went to an AD and bought new. New would always be better but as said it is price driven.

Ideally new, but if PM, I'd buy mint condition used due to the early financial hit.

I just bought two new matching DJ's, one 31mm and one 36mm from DavidSW. Both with all protective stickers on and our names on the cards. Saved around $1,000 on each verses buying from an AD. Completely satisfied with that deal and of course, DavidSW!

New or used?
I like new over used in general, provided the manufacturer has not made changes I fine unappealing. However, a used watch in fine or LNIB condition can save you a lot of money. As I am not a collector, but rather a wearer, I don't mind a little swirling or light scratching on the bracelet. I'll do that to a watch in a week or two from daily wear anyway. My one pet peeve is the crystal and bezel. The crystal has to be perfect and the bezel nearly so. I used to buy only new, from ADs, but I've wished up and learned that with some discernment and knowledge a used watch can be just as good (or better) than new in some cases. It was this forum that taught me that lesson.

Whether it is fiscally smart or not, I never wanted to wonder if something bad would happen sending it in for service so I have bought new.

New for 6 Rolex and 3 Pateks and a variety of lesser watches. I am considering buying a Sub Date from DavidSW. It does have to be new and with my name on the warranty card. Not sure if that is possible however.

I just bought my 42mm Explorer II new from DavidSW and my name is on the warranty card. As this was my first Rolex, that was one of my main concerns. He emailed me saying that the warranty will be honored by Rolex. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For myself I could go new or used.
As a gift for someone else, definitely new from an AD. Last Christmas I brought my dad into our local AD when his watch was ready to be picked up and sized for his wrist. I reckon it's a better experience than handing him a gift wrapped box with someone else's name on the warranty card, regardless of how much money I could have saved. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Although not a true 'vintage' model (i.e. a 4 digit reference) my 16610 was purchased in that manner. |

Used is fine if there is no scratches from removing bracelet and the screw heads in the bracelet are not ruined with too small screwdriver. Of course the rest of the watch should also be in good condition :)
