I haven't been able to find a thread on whisky (there's one for wine), and surely there're some whisky lovers here!? Possibly even a Keeper of the Quaich??



Share your choice of drink (bourbon, scotch, irish, japanese, rye etc.) and maybe a description of how it tastes to you. Enable someone to go out and try it too!



I'll start.



My go to is Lagavulin 16, single malt scotch. The peaty aroma got me at first whiff. I remember thinking this smelt like smoked salmon! It's subtly sweet and slightly spicy. Perfect pre or post meal. Very different to other scotch whiskies. Price-wise, a 750ml bottle can be picked up for about $50-$70 at your local Costco. Not something that will break the bank for sure; try it if you haven't!

I love JW... Green is an excellent choice. Have you tried all of them? In my honest opinion though, Gold is just as great as Blue - for 1/2 the price

I'm a big Lagavulin fan, especially the 16.
I love the initial peat which transfers into this lovely warm and smooth taste.

The Lagavulin 8 is a very pale coloured dram, very strong peat.
I'd say it compares to a Laphroaig 10 but with a bit more bite in the beginning and fruit after that. Just somewhat more complex, maybe not entirely worth the premium but certainly a very nice Scotch.

Laphroaig 10 is obviously a classic, hard to beat for the price. It was the first peat experience for me and I immediately fell in love.

Aberlour 10 is also one of my go-to whiskies, I love the overall softness of the taste, sweat and warm due to the sherry cask. This one is also amazing value, as it can often be had for much less than €30,-

I've tried Nikka from the barrel at a friend's place, I really needed a few drops of water, the taste is nice but over 50% alcohol just makes it harsh IMO.

Tried the Yamasaki 12 and 18 as well, both are excellent and I would compare them to a fine Highland whisky, but the prices are just insane, won't buy a bottle anytime soon.

But Ardbeg 10 is without question my fav. It’s depth and balance is to my taste, incredible.

I probably drink too much, sometimes a glass or 2 a night, Jura 10, highland park 12 and a local black label from the supermarket help fill in the gaps.

Laphroaig 10

There's a dedicated cult of people who love this whisky and it has a unique taste even compared to other Islays.

Interestingly I prefer the 10 year to the more expensive Laphroaig quarter cask.

quarter cask is my favorite. Love the taste in general of Laphroaig though

Same here. Although a 25 yo sherry cask Macallan is my absolute favorite. But at 2K+ per bottle, I bring out the three bottles I have only on very extra special occasions and then only for me.

Edradour 10 y.o. is my favourite with Laphroaig 10 coming in second. I'm also very much looking forward to trying the whisky from the Eden Distillery in St. Andrews when it is eventually released (a few years to wait sadly).

A recent discovery based on positive press coverage is the Aldi Islay single malt. Very, VERY drinkable.

I usually have a bottle of Famous grouse in my decanter for the times I just want to taste whisky rather than do the complex nosing/tasting.

Johnny Walker Blue King George V is my favorite. Macallan 18 Spanish sherry oak aged is 2, and Sinatra series Jack Daniels is 3.

I LOVE my single barrel Jack, but it's a very different price point. The others I listed are over $200/bottle. Single barrel is $50. In the under $60 range, Glenlivet 12 and single barrel Jack are my go to drinks. Obviously, I'm going to stick with Jack for quite a while.

I have become a huge Irish Whiskey fan over the last several years. It has become my drink of choice.
Never drink Scotch anymore.
But I do like a good Bourbon.

My current stable of Irish Whiskey's at home.

Jameson Coopers Croze
Redbreast 15
Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy.

Next up are Redbreast 21 and Midleton Dair Ghaelich.

I also quite like Green Spot and Yellow Spot. I got a Green Spot finished in Bordeaux casks while visiting the Jameson Distillery in Dublin last summer. LOL, That is long gone!

I've made a couple of trips to NY this summer and paid a visit each trip to the Dead Rabbit. Oh, man! What a menu. Did many tastings. Way too many to remember them all. Here's a tip, if you like the beverages we are discussing in this thread, go to the Dead Rabbit next time you are in NYC. You're welcome!

I have some groupings Bas, but no comprehensive photo's cause I have things in different spots. I keep some of my un opened stuff in an offsite storage facility with my wine. I'll see what I can put together over the weekend for you, here's a bourbon tease from a few years ago...

I agree on the 12 year over the 15, not a fan of the 15 and if you get a shot to try the 21, do it, it's a great pour!!
