Please help me choose a Rolex for my assistant!

My paralegal has been very loyal to me for years, and I'm ready to reward her with a brand new DateJust 31. I know I want a stick dial and a jubilee band, but I can't decide what color dial. Her current watch (Citizen) has a white dial. She bought another off brand watch, and it has a black dial. I have a DateJust 41 with a blue dial, and that blue dial really sings to me. I can think of reasons for any of these three choices. At the end of the day, which would you suggest?

My wife went with black and she loves it and it's the classic Rolex dial color too

Makes sense; white might clash... Me, I'd choose to give a white face as it is a bit dressier look.

Exactly, I can only remember the discussion I had with my girl when I thought she’d love a red grape dial. Some women it seems are very different from us in how they wear watches. They won’t wear even the best watch if it doesn’t fit their outfit for the day. You maw want to consider that and steer towards the very versatile.

That blue looks so good. I'd go with that or the black as it will be easier to read.

Black, white or silver...any will be great. Definitely not blue as it is the most limited for matching with clothes.

The blue I'd avoid since you have one yourself. A matching set IMO constitutes camaraderie between men but a more intimate relationship for man and woman (double-standard, I know... but that's just how the world is with first glances).

I think the best question though is which do you see her wearing more often? The white citizen or the black off brand? Whichever one is more prevalent is probably what she coordinates with her attire the most.

black dial is most versatile imo. My first Rolex was a DJ2 Black dial & it was the most striking dial at the AD.

I hope you're not married on this one. Does she admire your watch enough that you feel she'll love having a Rolex herself? She may just as soon love a $6-7K bonus check. But, if a BNIB DJ it is, and of the 3 choices, I'd vote black, then white, then blue.

Very fair question. I considered the same. Her husband is a pilot and they are very financially secure, so she doesn't need a check. I hope I'm not violating forum rules by answering your question, but let's just say hypothetically that her "off brand" black dial watch is a non authentic watch with a very, very famous name. She greatly admires my DateJust 41, and I want her to have the real thing.

It's an awesome show of appreciation. Even more so, based on her current selection, sounds like black is the way to go. Whichever you decide, sounds like she'll love it!

Does she know her watch is a fake too? You may open up Pandora's box if she believes it's real.

She is well aware that her off brand, black dial watch is less than authentic. She jokes about it and claims she only bought it to fool her in laws.

That is sexist IMO. bonuses in any industry are typically based on performance, not perceived need

Well in my opinion, you are an idiot. So let me enlighten you mister "I like to call people I don't know sexist." State Bar ethics rules prohibit me from sharing the profits of law with a non-attorney. So I can't pay her a cash bonus, or write her a check. However, I am permitted to buy her a gift, and she has made it clear that she has a huge desire to own a real Rolex. You got any more insults to send my way??!?! Oh, and by the way, I made nothing complicated. YOU did that. Nothing about gifting a watch to my one and only employee even enters the same planet as a federal anti-discrimination statute. That's probably the most ignorant thing I have read in years. I try to reach out here in good faith to find the best colored dial, and instead get this kind of nonsense. You are an idiot, and I'm being kind. Perhaps you could try and be less ignorant when hurling insults at those that you don't even know, nor have ever met.

I love the crazy posts I get to read here!

The top quote is just plain weird. No words.

Second quote. Are you insane? He talks about her loyalty and performance, and notes that her and her husband are well off and he thinks she would prefer a nice watch to just a check. Yet, you accuse him of engaging in sexist behavior. That's sick.

I really hope your crazy feminist extremist-sounding comments about sexism and discrimination are in jest. Although I doubt it.

Wow I was half joking but do find it a little sexist. And not because of giving away a watch -- plenty of companies do that -- but because of considering the husband's job status. Why should that have any bearing on the type and amount of compensation she receives?

I doubt an employer say, "Tom has been my top sales guy for years, and I want to reward him. But his wife's a doctor, so he doesn't need a check"

Of the choices you've listed I would suggest either black or white, both neutral colors that go with anything. BUT, I would suggest you consider the silver dial, which (in my opinion) is a richer look that also goes with anything.
