Rolex or Grand Seiko for my 2nd watch? Decisions decisions...

Ok. So I decided to purchase a white dial watch to go with my ceramic SD4000. I'm trying to decide between a datejust 41 (126300) or a Grand Seiko (sbgr255). Now I know this is a Rolex forum and the majority are going to automatically pick the datejust but the Grand Seiko is a serious/beautiful watch! Before I decide I wanted to get your thoughts on the Grand Seiko. I will either end up with 2 classic Rolex's black/white or the best of both worlds with a Rolex and a Grand Seiko black/white. Thanks in advance. Heres a picture of the Grand Seiko.

If you go GS, go 9F quartz imo.

Agreed. 9F quartz is an affordable way to appreciate GS case and dial finishing

Their auto movements are pretty thick. At that price point, I'm headed to other brands

Also that clutched second hand movement is very special and the accuracy is incredible.

I still haven't gotten my first Rolex, but am already having this same debate. As of right now, I am leaning towards the Grand Seiko. I kind of like it because it is the ULTIMATE under-the-radar watch. Even many watch guys won't like Grand Seiko for the Seiko connotation. It is the white-gold-being-mistaken-for-steel issue on steroids!
I like the old SBGA011 Snowflake with the SEIKO at the top best, and I am only really interested in the Spring Drive movements

With the sticks, I wish GS had put lume. That would be a deal breaker for me.

White GS? It HAS to be the Snowflake.

That being said, the bracelet and clasp leaves something to be desired, IMHO. So, DJ 41 for me (jubilee + smooth bezel).

I would consider a zenith white dial daytona as well like a 16518 and a polar explorer.

I'd go for the Grand Seiko. Lots of respect for the brand. Have you taken a look at their High Beats?

I've had a couple GS Spring Drives and I'd have to say Rolex only for its retention of resale value (I'm a serial flipper). If you like the GS and enjoy a stealth watch that you can play off as "just a Seiko", then go for it.

Keep in mind, if you're in it for the long haul, the GS is going to be a nightmare to get serviced.

This is a great thread, I have had my eye on a GS for almost 2 years, just not sure which one. Then again, I also like the new DJ41, so nothing is easy.

It's nice to see the balanced responses, although it's hard not to lean toward Rolex.

Here’s the answer that is in the form of a question, “What’s a Grand Seiko?”.

I wouldn't pick that GS, looks a little flat and sterile.

I went with a Grand Seiko Chronograph (sbgc201) as my second watch, with the SD4k being the first. I am so glad that I did. The GS is an awesome watch. I love the accuracy of the spring drive. It gains about 2-3 seconds per month at most. The high beat sweep is mesmerizing. The finish is superlative. I couldn't be happier with a watch. (Same for the SD4k, too.)

Congrats!!!
Stunning watch!

I'm also looking for a GS chronograph! It amazes me how smooth the spring drive second hand moves.

The GS is a honey of a watch but I’m drawn to the date just 41 on jubilee.
Aesthetically, hard to beat a DJ.

Go try on the GS a few times. I strongly preferred their quartz movements. The bracelet is extremely comfortable and the watch grows on you.

Rolex for sure! My second and third was Rolex! The GS is a great watch though. Just too many great Rolex's in the way!
