16710 with 3186 movement questions
I’ve been looking into getting a 16710 z or m serial with a 3186 movement either coke or pepsi insert. What do the vintage masters think about this watch as good collecting piece? Do you think price will stay strong? Been seeing them listed for at least $14k. Seems high??

In my opinion, the premium that some are willing to pay now for the 3186 movement is pretty crazy. If you were able to buy the watch new back in 2007 then you got a great investment piece, now I personally would not choose it over the 3185 movement.

Matt,
It is likely a 16710-3186 will increase in value but so will a 16710-3185. I suspect the investment and price ratio will remain at 2:1 for some time. From an investment stand point your money is probably better in the stock market versus either of these two, but the tactile emotional pleasure of ownership sways our decision making. Consider that also when you are looking at the 3185 or 3186 choice. Regardless, overall condition and completeness should be a major part of your decision. Both are fine watches you should be proud of. If you do decide 3186, be safe and go for the "credit card warranty" and obvious verification of say the "crown test" or visible inspection of the movement. A late "Z", stick/error dial 3186 coke for your motivation. Good luck! |

Even Explorer II 16570 with 3186 with B&P prices are touching $6k now.

I've owned a few GMTs the past couple of decades and place no intrinsic added value on movements, let alone the 3186 movement. $14,000 ...seriously!!!! I'd rather buy a green Submariner 16610LV set for that kind of money.

I should add that it's not the 3186 movement itself that makes the watch desirable or more valuable, IMO, it's the relative scarcity of the 16710 with that movement inside. Same story with the 16570, but to a lesser extent as more were made. If anything, the 3186 is more problematic than the 3185.

I'd probably rather have the 3185 version, regardless of so-called collectibility. |

The 16570 Explorer II with 3186 (secondhand) has been selling for around $5,000 over the last couple of years or so, and recently has been going up to $6,000. If you've been buying your watches "terribly" as you say, I assume you've paid much more for that model?

Great watch the older GMT best wishes hope you get one. I can’t help but think and maybe I’m wrong but the demand for the stainless Daytona has bumped the prices up to almost absurd with other Rolex sports models in particular.

I like my M as the last of the old models.
Having the 3186 movement in both my GMT's is just a bonus.

The time tested 3185 is more robust. At least in the 'jumping hour hand' crown setting function, which is a common problem area on the 3186. Anything rare and Rolex = $$$s
