Day Date: Older platinum 36 vs new WG 40?
Hello all,
This is my third post, and I already greatly appreciate the insights you all have provided. I’ve narrowed my decision making to the point that I’ve decided that I’d like to purchase a Day Date and really prefer the platinum with the blue dial. My wrist is about 6.5”, and I think the 36 will be fine for me. On the other hand, my old DJ sometimes seems a bit small, and I once owned a Daytona that seemed like a good fit. So, I’m open to a range of sizes. My budget will be in the $25-30k range, and that looks pretty appropriate for finding what I want in a 36mm platinum. As I look at the market, I see examples ranging from 10-16 years old. My question is how much difference a few years will make? Is 6 years newer worth another $6K if they are the same model number? Am I not thinking about some sort of high service costs that would be right around the corner? Also, I can’t help but notice that I could get a brand new WG 40mm DD in the same price range from Takuya, and it makes me wonder if I’m being a bit foolish to focus on that ice blue dial. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. |

The new bracelet, especially the more robust Crown Clasp, is worth the difference to me. Platinum is a bit more resistant to dents than 18K WG, so I would stick with the platinum if your budget allows. I also prefer the 36-mm size, but I am likely in the minority.

NO Question Plat over WG. I also would do with the newer solid bracelet model. The DD sits higher than the DJ so I think a 36 would be perfect!!

For that money I wouldn't even hesitate to go WG with olive or blue dial.

My rule of thumb is, if you can buy a new watch...go for it.

Glacier 36 vs Olive 40 tough battle right there. I might have to give slight edge to the 118206.

I'd go WG 40, but it is a tough choice.

This is tough and I've been tempted by the platinum Day Dates many times.....but ultimately I'd stick with gold Day Dates (gold, WG, RG) because of the fluted bezel. I don't think it's a Day Date without one.

I love a light blue 36mm Plat. Fancy enough to seriously dress up, subtle but standout to the Rolex nerds, and not too large. The tool watches can be 40mm+, but the dressier ones do fine in 36. Pricing tbd...the newer the better for daily usability, unless we’re talking about serious collecting or family herlooms...

I prefer the bigger cases, personally, so it's DD2 for me. With that being said, I got the WG DD2 with the blue wave dial, which I wanted for a long time. However, the opportunity arose to get the Platinum DD2, and the WG was gone after one wear and less than 30 days of ownership... Platinum just looks and feels great on the wrist, and the ice blue/ glacier dials are mesmerizing! IMO, you will not regret it. And, for the record, I am a fan of the WG DD40 with Olive dial.

The dial on my 36 mm DD is amost silver compared to the blue dial on a 44 mm DD. Just something to think about.

36mm, Platinum with Ice Blue Dial...makes me light-headed and a bit giddy.
Good luck with your decision, Scott |

This thread is missing pictures. BLM2 raises an interesting point. The platinum DD36 ice blue/ glacier dials have different color variations over the years.

DD40 for sure. If you want a blue dial get the WG with the blue dial - its a darker blue but more beautiful in my eyes.
The light blue looks silver/non blue in alot of lighting situations. |

I have the YG DD40 with a 7” wrist and I just think 38-40mm is as small as I would go and I had the last TOG that was a “big 36” and had to let it go. So that being said the DD40 is the perfect size, ceramic in the bracelet, 72 hour newer movement, WG Blue or Green Deconstructed Romans is definitely the way to go, hands down!!

DD40.
Brand new. 5 year warranty. Longer Power reserve. No bracelet stretch (and it'll stay that way much longer with the ceramic sleeves). With all that said, go with whichever one you love the most. You'll never regret it. |

Im struggling with exact same decision. Preowned 36 platinum vs new 40 in YG or WG. Will inherit 1803 in YG so would rather leave that “special” from my father.

Platinum 36 all the way especially if you can find a glacier waves Arabic dial like this with the newer clasp
