You could be busier than ever Bas, just changing batteries and 'chip' upgrades tho'!

I hope it never happens to Rolex......but it might.

I wonder 'what's next'?.....Apple, wi-fi cranium inserts, with retina projection?

The patina on the hands doesn't quite match the rest of the watch.

Coming to a neighborhood near You ! A lot sooner than we wish. My Son has loved my 5513 Sub all his life and can't wait to get it. But, He wears an "Apple" watch. I am truly amazed at how Rolex has been able to keep the Watches we Know and Love on Top for so long. I spent twenty years in the Semiconductor business and we made watch circuits for pennies right here in America. Then the Chinese came to town !

It's not US. It's the next generations. They are just interested in things different than US. No 55 Chevy. It's Imports now. Four banger Twin Turbo charged. For most of them they are Holding their entire World as they know it in the palm of their Hand. Oh! they are still interested in Your Charge Card. I am trained in Machine Tools. No more Jobs in Machine tools. Lucky to be Retired. I Love Cars,Watches and any kind of Machine. Their World is Electronic.

Life time is too short on wearable tech to warrant Rolex doing this. Rolex selling a watch with a two year life expectancy due to technology obsolescence? I doubt it. Especially not at $10K per. I'd doubt it would fly even in the Tudor line and price range.

The rotating bezel would now become a 'control knob' for various functions and the traditional water resistance rating greatly reduced. Then again, how many Submariner owners are actually scuba divers?

As far as technical 'upgrades' go, a periodic RSC module replacement should do the trick. Considering that a complete mechanical overhaul usually runs about $900-$1200 nowadays, if Rolex can keep this servicing cost around $400 every 2-3 years, the chances are few customers will complain. After all, we are now living in a 'high-tech' world where today's purchase is yesterday's news.

Ideally, an entirely new watch model should bear this 'smart' designation and technology. We saw it once before with the Oysterquartz. Why mess with a Submariner?

Does the menu incorporate a Grilled Steak timer with "R/MR/M/MW/WD settings? If not, then it's useless as a dive watch.

Of course, that omission may be overlooked if the pearl thingy doubles as a spy camera and it comes with a selection of James Bond movie theme ringtones.

Kind of like the gold Apple Watch. I'm in semiconductor engineering; I really doubt it would work, fwiw.

No thanks. I want to reduce the amount of techno-distraction, not increase it.

The day I retire, I’m shutting my ringer off permanently. If you want my attention then, knock on the front door, or call my wife.

I have ZERO use or desire for any mobile device especially a stinking smartphone. I will never own one and never have any watch or subdermal implant etc linking to said miserable device.

+1,

I wish I could throw it in the ocean, or at least disable any call features...

I purchased an Apple Watch and wore it every day for two and a half months (July, August and part of September 2017). I used the fitness tracking and heart rate monitor and played with Several apps and dropped 15 pounds while significantly increasing my fitness level. I have worn it maybe a dozen times since then and returned to wearing my real watch collection. While I am impressed with the technology, it just isn’t for me. I have memorized my core workouts and walking distances and don’t have a need to religiously track those things. Meanwhile, my phone tracks steps and elevation and the watch screen is just too small for meaningful use. I’ve learned to never say never, but it’s highly doubtful that Rolex will go on that direction anytime soon. I’ve switched the Apple Watch to right hand use so I can leave my Rolex or other nice watch on my left wrist and use it to track the occasional work out but it does look silly!

I can see a hybrid configuration, whereas the mechanical movement generates power for a “smart” dial, or something similar. Full connection with your phone when wanted or needed.

Given we're all ageing, perhaps build one of these into an Oyster case...

Is there anyway to do a hybrid mechanical watch with some tech inincluded, which will feed data on to phone? Such as a pedometer?
