Aquanaut question
Need advice please.
I own a 1st generation Aquanaut Jumbo (ref. 5065) - purchased new, never worn, still sealed in plastic from the dealer, Open Papers; a Safe Queen. I know I’m in the minority, but I prefer this over the 2nd generation model. It was a tough watch to find back in the day. Questions: 1) Does this hold any desirability with collectors? 2) What price would I expect if put on the market now? |

Neil is back at the trading desk
![]() He means it is not actively bought and sold here so the liquidity is not there, making it hard to ascertain market price. IMHO a NOS patek sports watch will always have a buyer. If OP has held it this long might as well stick with it. Some research here leads me to believe nice Pre owned examples were asking about 13k usd.

Why did you never wear it? Herein lies the trouble with buying for investment. You have missed the value of years of pleasure in wearing the watch, but will eat all of the depreciation.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.
![]() I actually owned 2 of them; I did wear 1 (sold long ago) and kept the other as a “Safe Queen”. Quote:
And at this point it is beyond warrantee anyway so I see no reason why it wouldn’t be serviced by Patek. |

There appear to be only three 5065s in stainless available on Chrono24 right now. The asking prices are $17,699, $20,000+, and $24,000.

I’ve never seen open papers on a Patek so I can’t speculate on how this could happen.

Open papers with a Patek would seem like a big negative actually. It's not like they are going to do warranty work without having a receipt/registration and it's not like an individual could register a watch years after getting it I don't think. This open papers thing seems to be a prevalent selling point, listed on quite a few ads, but to me I've never seen the point. I'd much rather buy a watch second hand that has an actual name of a buyer, meaning it has always been legit. Maybe I'm wrong though-

I have heard that when the Aquanaut was originally released in the late 1990s, it was very much in demand and there were long wait lists. AFAIK it came at a price point lower than other men's Patek and it took a few years before supply began to meet demand.
There will always be a market for the 5065A, especially in original unworn condition. I don't know if open papers will persuade buyers one way or another. Many people request open papers for Patek watches for various reasons - some for privacy concerns and others for keeping prying eyes off their assets (e.g. creditors or tax collectors). As for market value, it will certainly be higher than what OP paid for back in the 1990's or early 2000s. I assume MSRP was somewhere in the $5000-$10000 range. However taking into account inflation, it may be a wash. If you are interested in selling it, just make a private inquiry to one of the online or B&M resellers. They will quickly tell you what they will pay you, taking into account their markup margin and at what price they expect to sell it for. |

Regarding the value of your 5065--for what it's worth, I see one sold on EBay on January 20th for $16,498.

Gee, it’s a waterproof watch -couldn’t the seller at least use a little soap & water to clean it up before the photos? Also noticed that watch had an early cal. 315/190 movement - by that I mean it was not as well decorated as the later ones (tiny Geneva Seal, only marked 30 jewels and no “adjusted to” markings). |

Pretty cool. You will have a very small buying pool because once you open it the value comes down substantially. Kind of a curse of NOS watches.
I would just keep it.

I would sell it for a fair market price, and buy the updated dial and strap of the 5167 or 64.

Loved the 5296 sector dial when I owned it (now sold) and would consider again if made in platinum.

Got the wife a 5065 when i did the 5067. As i recall it was 12k used in mint with box, papers, etc about 4 years ago. Flipped for small loss or even. With yours being sealed, it makes for something interesting, if perhaps needing service due to oils drying over time. The smaller case yet bolder dial never seemed to make it a hot model. Was nice on the wife tho, yet she needed something more durable so she now wears a DJ36 mop pink dial all blinged.
