What's the Panerai appeal?

I've never heard of the brand before I came to this forum. Now I'm starting to notice them in the wild. Why do you like Panerai?

Me too, I all honesty I have never heard of this brand my entire life until coming across TRF. After checking a few out from pictures here I can honestly say I am not in love with them. But, perhaps I need to actually go to an AD and try one on to get a true appeal value?

I really admire the Panerai due to it's size as well as the different looks you can get by changing the straps / bands. Very cool military style watches. I only wish they had an in house movement as I feel they are a bit over priced for a modified ETA timepiece. But that is just my uneducated 2 cents worth.

Still I will put one or two of them in my collection at some point!

I personally love the Paneris. They have the best bagels and great coffee. Also some great bearclaws. How the hell did they get in the watch business?

I believe that Rolex used to make the Panerai case for the Italian Navy. If you look at the early Panerai Radiomir and an early Rolex Oyster, you can see the similarities in the case.

i like the designs...own a PAM Submersible. Panerai also has a rich history on their watches.

• Large case size, 44mm+
• Exhibition backs (111/112)
• Unique crown guard
• Art Deco case design (Luminor)

For some brands, you need to be close enough to read the dial to see who made the watch. You can spot a Panerai from across the room.

i have a few rolex watches and 1 panerai. i think the panerai is got its
own character. it is not as common seen as a rolex, and it is getting
it fame and popularity around.

I think they are big and I have small wrist BUT
I wear a Breitling Navitimer and a Rolex DSSD
and they feel great and dont look silly on me.

i admire panerai but i would personally not buy one, or at least not until after i buy all the rolexs i ever want. To me all panerais look the same and im not a fan of big cases. i would own the deep sea before i own any panerai :)

Panerai used to supply watches to the Italian Navy. It sprang to prominence some years ago when Sylvester Stallone wore a Panerai in the movie Daylight and there is now a model known as the Daylight. The company restricts its production and so every model is supposedly "limited'' in number, which adds to its appeal. It also regularly produces limited, numbered runs which have proven popular. Some movie/TV stars also wear the watch on their shows - see for example, David Caruso on CSI Miami and Carmine Giovinazzo on CSI New York.

Unfortunately, David C wore a fake Panerai in the show

I like a watch on a leather strap. Most others are nice watches, but too small IMO ( Patek, Brequet etc). Sure I would love one, but their prices are crazy.
I too was a Rolex only guy, until I joined here. Saw a few, tried one one & I was hooked.
It's nice to change up from a bracelet to leather.
Plus, as eyes getting older, I can see the Pannies wayyy better than any Rolex.
Saying all that, my last purchase was a Daytona.

Either you get them, or you don't.

Plus, the general population has no idea what they are. So I can wear them at work & my clients don't realize the value on my wrist. If they did, they would say I charge to much

I LOVE Panerai and that was my first real watch. They are great. I like wearing them - very comfortable and just cool. Love to see the movement on the clear caseback even if it is considered by many to be an inferior movement. I think it works great! I can't wait to get a couple more.

Do not try them on... You will want one. Fair warning...

One of the things that catches my attention about Panerais are the limited number of them produced each year. I don't know how much of that is hype or model shifting, but still there are far less of them made than Rolex's.

They do not appear to have a claim to fame outside of the Rocky connection. No particular history comparable to Rolex or Omega. Seems to primarily a fashion statement type of watch. Kind of like an expensive Fossil?

Yes, it's very much a fashion statement watch. Personally I don't like them but you have to give credit where it's due - the brand has become very popular through very clever marketing, using the "limited'' angle. Also, although their cheaper models use ETA/Valjoux movements, they have developed a few interesting mechanisms of their own recently.
