1963 Datejust

Hi All, first post here.

I am considering purchasing a Datejust from my birth year, 1963 and am looking for advice on what to look for, beside the obvious.

This is what I know.
-No to anything with apparent water damage.
-No to anything that has been over polished.
-I'm most likely not going to find one with a bracelet that's not stretched.
-I want stainless
-I prefer a silver or white dial

What should I be looking for in addition and what questions should I be asking?

Few things come to mind - like condition of the movement, pitting, case tube/crown, waterproof test, clear numbers, matching patina, ....

Ref 1603 is all stainless and ref 1601 has a 14k gold bezel. There's a 1600 DJ with a smooth stainless but these are a little more rare.

I would also look 1. a good case / without pitting & damages and clear stampings. 2. a good (not redone) dial.

Because of the age of the watch (55 years!) many watches are coupled together. Check the case back numbers (year of production)
against the serial. When the movement is in good shape - service history would not be important for me. Bring the watch after the purchase to a reputable watchmaker (familiar with vintage rolex), get a new plexi - seals etc. Bring it back to specs and enjoy your new acquisition

Make sure that the dial hasn't been repainted - many of these watches, specially Datejusts have dials redone. Also it would be great if you can find one with papers. Good luck!
