Not sure, Daytona + £500 for a Deepsea?

Hi
I have a Daytona in steel, bought new in 03 that is actually a 01 year of manufacture, it was bought from a certified dealer.
I ordered a new Deepsea in February, I was initially told that it wouldn't be available until summer next year.
I got a call tonight and the watch is here, I have been in to see it and try it on and I have mixed feelings, I love the size of the watch which is huge but the writing inside the bezel looks tacky.
The dealer is not interested in a PX of my Daytona, I now realise that they have gone up considerably in the list price, I think I paid around £3.5k and thay are now £5,730!
A second hand dealer from the internet has offered me £4,750.00 for the Daytona tonight, the new Deepsea is list at £5,340.00.
What do you guys think I should do, I cannot afford both?
Thanks

I think that if we didn't move watches around, then for some of us, the attraction of the hobby/passion would go away...

I think that in the future, Daytonas will continue to bring a premium, but the Deepsea will be a stock item, so personally I would keep the Daytona..

But that's just me......

personally I would 100% keep the daytona. What is the condition of your daytona? has it been serviced recently? if you really want the deep sea the go for it. I would not
and welcome

I'd stick with the Daytona. It's a timeless classic that will never be out of style. That being said, you'll have to trust your own judgment on this one.

Out of interest why was your S/S Daytona sitting around at the AD for 2 years !? PS - I'd keep the Daytona !

I would keep the Daytona, no questions asked! Very sought after time piece and AD's in the past and currently still do demand a premium for this watch. If you really prefer and like the deepsea and would not miss the Daytona in the near future then get rid..

Pick the watch you will enjoy the most. I've got to wonder if you're thinking about doing this because you are looking for change as opposed to really wanting the DSSD. You have to think months (and years) down the road and use your best judgement/guess to determine which one you'll be happier with. These are obviously two extremely different watches.

Personally, I don't put too much stock into how rare/sought after a watch is to the masses...what does that have to do with how much YOU like a watch. I believe the Daytona will always have a bigger following & probably hold their values much better than the DSSD. That said, I could have had either watch when I bought my DSSD a month ago...and you know what...I couldn't be happier with my decision. For me, the Daytona just didn't have everything I'm looking for in a watch...it's too small for my liking and the lack of date is always going to be a deal breaker for me.

P.S. I too disliked the writing...but take my word for it that it's really not too bad when you start to wear it on a daily basis & under low light you are hard pressed to even see it. Pictures definitely look worse than reality w/ regard to the text. Cheers.

Since Daytona is not doing it for me, i would go for the DeepSea with all the new features! It is an awesome watch!

I'd echo that. I don't really care for chronagraphs - a function I would never use just cluttering up the dial. I have a Deepsea and love it. OK, i'd never dive that deep but it's water resistance doesn't get in the way of telling the time.

imho keep the daytona...

and buy the daytona if you can get 24 months interest credit with 20% deposit down... i know goldsmiths does this...

or if you can wait... get it at 10% off with a signet discount card at ernest jones... with 12 months interest free credit...

also make sure you get the 2 some percent off the vat... every little helps eh...

i hope this helps some...

If you do decide to sell the Daytona don not sell it on the cheap. £4750 is a cheap price methinks. How much do you imagine the dealer will sell it on for? Have a look at various sites for an accurate sale price.

Personally .......If you can keep and own both do so. If not although the DSSD is my favourite, you will not be able to replace at RRP the Daytona as easily as you will the DSSD in a few months. Honestly! IMHO!

This, of course, is my personal opinion; but I'd grab the DSSD in a heartbeat.

Daytona!

All I read for years on the Panerai and other large watch boards was "I love Rolex, but they are too small. "If Rolex made a larger sport watch I would be all over it!" Well, Rolex granted your wish.... and not too many people jumped.

While the DeepSea may be the sign of the future, the Daytona is still the ultimate sport watch IMHO.

i agree with moby33.. its probably just a "need" for a change and its quite common with this sickness; the obsessive/compulsive trait in you will do you in. but you will also have to consider the "seller's remorse"... its hard to live with it and you'll end up owning both pieces... hehehe... that's life mate!

I gotta go along with JJ. I am a sub guy and any watch with all those dials and gadgets is not me. Too much going on there. DSSD is like the classic Sub. Has Rollie all over it. You have to go with what you like and what makes you feel real good. As some have said, you will eventually own both of them. If you have the Daytona and obviously you like it..keep it and save up for the DSSD. You'll get it!

Honestly, you'd have to be a fool to trade a Daytona for a DSSD. In no time, you will be buying them on the second hand market for huge discounts. They are in every dealers case in Southern California..........they can't give them away. Keep the Daytona for awhile and just sit back and wait. By this time next year, you'll have your choice of DSSD's and at great discounts.

Agreed...in NY, DSSD are everywhere, most at a very good discount due to its high price and limited appeal.
It is just the opposite for the SS Daytona. Limited supply with a constant demand...prices are pretty firm, even in a horrible market.
Unless you just are eager and want to flip, wait until next year and your deal will be much better.

Not that i doubt you, but can you post or PM the AD'S in NY that have them, a NY TRF member (ROLEXGIANTS)is looking for one and i cant find one in NY for him. I called quite a few today for him(most of the local metro NY one's that i know personally), nobody had one.

If this is the case you should buy as many as you can and ship them to UK dealers (grey) as availability is still relatively poor here and your $ is killing our £. You stand to make a decent earner if what you say is true. Alternatively can you list all the AD's so others can benefit?

Had my DSSD for 1 month and worn it every day. I have 2 Daytonas that get no wrist time. The Daytona is a Classic but if I could afford only one it would be the DSSD. It is the definitive dive watch.

keep the daytona sir

I've been doing some calculation with the exchange rate comparing the price of what it cost approx in thailand 2nd hand market.
if I have a daytona around your year I would get around 6,000 GBP. or a bit lower depends on the watch condition and (box and papers)

the problem is when you sell it to the grey market buyer you wont get the real price.

this is the calculation of what the market is like in thailand I dont know if it's similar to other parts of the world.

I still don't quite understand these types of statements...to me, individuals that buy a certain watch by taking into account how the general population may (or may not) 'approve' of it seems pointless and ultimately can lead to buying a certain model for the wrong reasons.

I have had both...I would keep the Daytona, I flipped the Deep Sea and have been offered a couple via AD with Discount! This would never happen with a Daytona....Daytona's will always be the harder watch to get hold of...the Deep Sea will be in most AD windows in the next 12 months....I sell to a few Grey Dealers and it says it all when they will not buy Deep Sea's anymore...but they will always buy Daytona's.

Plus as you said in your post...you will make money by selling your Daytona.....you wont make any money when you come to sell your Deep Sea...the price will be less than your purchase price on this watch when it is used!!

Those are all good points and I agree with them IF you're purchasing a watch as a business venture. But business vs. pleasure are two different things. If one is more concerned with short (and long) term value retention then there is no debate IMO - Daytona will win every time.

But...if you take that part out of the equation and buy what you really like, then you'll never make a bad choice. Purchasing any type of high end watch in these times is not something that should be done solely for financial purposes IMO...if you're going to buy now, then you better make sure you love the watch & plan to keep for a long time (unless you like giving away $). Cheers.
